Leather. Condición: Very Good. Mr Melville Ilustrador. First edition. A lovely example of the first edition of this important exploration narrative. One of the earliest accounts of coastal Australia, this work is famed for its descriptions of the Great Barrier Reef. Written by Joseph Beete Jukes, a renowned geologist who served as the naturalist on the expedition referred to in these pages. This work is Jukes' own narrative of that voyage, which was commanded by Captain F P Blackwood. This was the first British expedition to be despatched to Australia on a surveying mission. Illustrated, with a frontispiece, nine plates, a folding chart of the Great Barrier Reef and fifteen vignettes to volume I. A frontispiece, eight plates, a map of the Eastern End of the Island of Java and three vignettes to volume II. Collated, these volumes have been bound without the publisher's adverts as is usual. Jukes notes that he originally sought for this work to be a complete journal of his voyage from 1842 to 1846. However he had 'no wish to repeat what might be already known, and no desire to re-describe scenes already familiar'. The purpose and results of the trip are explained in the extensive Appendix. With a detailed map of the north-east coast from Endeavour River north to New Guinea. This work has an entire chapter on the natural history of the Great Barrier Reef and his observations his observations align with Darwin's theory of the formation of coral reefs. A truly fascinating account by this noted naturalist regarding his ethnological observations and notes of natural history regarding the area. In a smart half calf binding. In contemporary half calf bindings with paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart with light rubbing to the joints and extremities. Spines have faded slightly. Front endpaper to volume I is detached but present. Otherwise, internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. Chip to the bottom corner of page xi, only affecting the margin. Just the odd spots to pages. The plates and folding map/chart(s) are in a bright condition. Very Good. book.

Two volumes, octavo, with many engravings (full-page and textual), and a folding map at the end of each volume; a fine copy, complete with all advertisement leaves including a half-sheet advertisement for Leichhardt in vol. I and another for Dutton's "South Australia" in vol. II, in the original and unfaded blue-grey blind-stamped cloth. First edition: a fine copy, in original condition, of this important surveying voyage of coastal Australia. Jukes' account is particularly important for his description of the Queensland coast, the Great Barrier Reef, and the Torres Strait, and includes an impressively detailed map of the north-east coast from Endeavour River north to New Guinea. The Fly, Captain Blackwood, sailed from Falmouth on 11 April 1842 with the cutter Bramble. Jukes sailed as naturalist to the expedition, and with his captain's consent wrote the official narrative. The survey of Torres Strait and of the Great Barrier Reef, as well as the various New Guinea explorations, were all of great importance. The proper scientific understanding of the Barrier Reef could not begin until the completion of the survey, which Jukes charted for the first time in detail. Jukes' own close examination of the reef was also significant, and his chapter on the subject 'is an invaluable record. His observations strongly supported Darwin's theory of the formation of coral reefs.' (Davidson). Indeed, Jukes' interest in coral formation is neatly summarised by the account's terrific opening line, 'I landed for the first time in my life on a coral island.' Ingleton notes: 'the Admiralty decided in 1841 to have the Great Barrier Reefs explored and to have the gaps surveyed in order that some means might be devised for marking the most eligible of these openings, in order that they could be recognised in due time and passed through in comparative safety. The expedition was noteworthy for being the first to be despatched to Australia on a purely surveying mission.' (Charting a Continent, pp. 61-66). Twelve of the plates are notably fine aquatints by Harden S. Melville, who published his own illustrated work on the voyage (Sketches in Australia and the Adjacent Islands, 1849). .

First edition, first issue, of this "very important voyage" (Hill), commissioned by the Admiralty to survey the Torres Strait, the hazardous Great Barrier Reef, and various regions in New Guinea. This copy in attractive condition. The expedition was the first to be despatched to Australia on a purely surveying mission. Blackwood's directions were so "accurate that many appear on maps to the present day" (Howgego). Jukes, a student of geologist Adam Sedgwick at Cambridge, was naturalist to the expedition. In 1839, through Sedgwick's influence, he was appointed geological surveyor to the colony of Newfoundland. On his return to England he failed to secure the chair in geology at University College, London, but was selected to accompany the Fly to Australia: "over the next four years Jukes pursued his science in locations such as Madeira, Cape Colony, New Guinea, Australia, and the Great Barrier Reef. By the time the Fly dropped anchor at Spithead on 19 June 1846 he was a geologist of global experience. he [was to become] perhaps the finest British field geologist of his day". Ferguson 4549; Hill 901; Howgego II B39; Ingleton, pp. 61-8; Spence 468; Wantrup 92a. 2 volumes, octavo. Original dark blue combed cloth, titles in gilt to spines, elaborate panelling in blind to boards, yellow coated endpapers. Publisher's advertisement tipped in after list of plates in both volumes. Uncoloured aquatint frontispiece to each, 14 other similar plates in all, together with 3 engraved plates, and numerous engraved illustrations to the text, including one full-page, a folding map at the end of each volume. Spines uniformly sunned, slight bumps and rubbing to spine ends and tips, occasional foxing to plates, contents notably clean; a lovely copy in very good condition.

Two volumes, octavo, 17 plates and two folding maps, illustrated; in attractive old pale tan half calf, double labels. First edition of this important account of the Fly's surveying voyage of coastal Australia. Jukes' account is particularly significant for his description of the Queensland coast, the Great Barrier Reef, and the Torres Strait, and includes an impressively detailed map of the north-east coast from Endeavour River north to New Guinea. Numerous encounters with native peoples, particularly in the Torres Strait are described in the text and illustrated in the splendid plates, mostly by Harden S. Melville, who who published his own illustrated work on the voyage (Sketches in Australia and the Adjacent Islands, 1849). The Fly, Captain Blackwood, sailed from Falmouth on 11 April 1842 with the cutter Bramble. Jukes sailed as naturalist to the expedition, and with his captain's consent wrote the official narrative. First Edition; Demy 8vo; Vol. I. pp.[ii], xiv, 423; frontispiece, 24 b/w plates, 1 b/w folding map of Great Barrier Reef. Vol. II. pp. [ii], viii, 362; frontispiece, 11 illustrations, 1 folding map of island of Java, appendices; both volumes in contemporary half blue calf, marbled boards, title lettered in gilt on spines, raised bands, marbled page edges, marble endpapers, boards scuffed and chipped at edges spines worn, light foxing to early pages, bookplate of William F Ross on front endpapers, good sound copies. Blackwood was commissioned to make a detailed scientific survey of the north-east coast of Australia, with particular attention to the Great Barrier Reef - the first expedition to be despatched to Australia on a purely surveying mission. Attached to the expedition were the marine geologist Joseph Beete Jukes, the zoologist John Macillivray, and the artist Harden Melville. From 1842 to 1846 they made a careful survey of the coast between Snady Cape and Torres Strait and explored the southern coasts of new Guinea, discovering most notably the Fly River. These surveys of Torres Strait and of the Great Barrier Reef were all of great importance, as were the discoveries made in new Guinea and the surrounding islands. Joseph Beete Jukes, the chronicler of the expedition, is remembered for both his scientific understanding of the reef and for his first charting of the reef. Wantrup. 92a, Ferguson, 4569.
