In the years one thousand seven hundred and seventy-seven, eight and nine. Second edition. Folding map & 19 engraved plates. Recent half calf, spine gilt, plates a little offset, with black cloth slipcase. xii, 175pp. London, J. Johnson, Paterson's four expeditions to the Cape were all undertaken before he entered active military service. His interests were chiefly in natural history, especially botany, and Le Vaillant regarded his work highly. Paterson later became Lieutenant-Governor of New South Wales. His work may well have been the model for the two Australian ?First Fleet? narratives by Phillip and White which were both published in 1790. Coloured and uncoloured copies of these two works were also issued, the coloured with their plates being printed on laid rather than the wove paper used for the ordinary edition, as with Paterson. Coloured copies of this work are very uncommon. Mendelssohn II, p143.

Original o primera edición
Hardcover. Condición: Very good- condition. First Edition. vi, ix-xii, 171 pages of text, followed by iii index and [i] errata; complete as issued. Illustrated by a large fold-out map and 17 plates. The date of publication is neatly handwritten at the bottom of the title page; previous owner's stamp twice on the title page and bookplate (circa 1910) on front pastedown endpaper: Henry Von Wackerbarth. Several light pencil notations in the margins. Rebound (circa 1910) but the leather is chipped, rubbed and worn, and would greatly benefit from a rebinding. Quarto, measuring 11 inches (28cm) in height. The pages were trimmed when rebound, and two of the botanical plates are trimmed with minor loss to the image at the top margin. One botanical plate is torn into the image area, with an early repair, with minor visible damage. The entirety of the text and plates are moderately affected by foxing, and the first two leaves are lightly soiled and/or stained. The fold-out map is creased from misfolding, but is intact and attractive. Size: Quarto (4to). Book.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1789. Quarto. xii, 171pp, iii. errata. Dedicated to Sir Joseph Banks Bart. Later full calf, raised bands, gilt title to spine. Slight rubbing. Illustrated with a large folding map and 17 copper-plates. Some age-toning to pages, occassional light marginal spotting. Small blind stamp to some plate edges, not intrusive. Small tear along fold of map near title. A 'Very Good' copy of this uncommon Africana title. William Paterson was a Scottish soldier, explorer, Lieutenant governor and botanist best known for leading early settlement in Tasmania. A native of Montrose, Scotland, Paterson was interested in botany as a boy and trained in horticulture at Syon in London. Paterson was sent to the Cape Colony by the wealthy and eccentric Countess of Strathmore to collect plants. He arrived in Table Bay on board the "Houghton" in May, 1777. He made four trips into the interior between May 1777 and March 1780, when he departed. Mendelssohn - South African Bibliography: page 143.
