Hard Cover. Condición: Good binding. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Poor dust jacket. Octavo. xxxi, [1], 822, [6] pp., illus. Self-styled, "De Luxe Edition." Here signed by Kent on the front free endpper. As issued, in publisher's cloth with Kent illustration in gilt on the front cover. Spine partially sunned; unfortunate predation to the cloth of the back joint, otherwise, binding is quite fresh with only light fraying at the tail of the spine; bookplate on the front pastedown; contents clean and binding solid; dust jacket with large loss of the spine and a portion of the rear panel; front flap is separated but present, all held together in a mylar cover. Poor to Fair jacket. Tanselle, in his A Checklist of Editions of Moby-Dick, 1851-1976, writes of the first, quarto edition of Kent's work: "The most elaborate physical presentation which had been accorded to Moby-Dick up to this time, and one of the finest examples of bookmaking to found among all the editions of his work. Kent's illustrations are now perhaps the best-known illustrations for Moby-Dick and are certainly among the most effective" (from Tanselle, No. 17). And indeed, Kent's illustration is singular and captured in this present Garden City edition (Tanselle, No. 18c) which was printed by the Lakeside Press, after an American and a British trade edition in a reduced-size, one-volume format (as here) was printed for Random House and Cassell respectively. Rare with Kent's signature.

First Edition. MOBY DICK, The Artist's Limited Edition, 1975, fine and bound in full leather with raised bands and pictorial stamping in a vg+ or better slip-case as issued. 1/1,500 copies SIGNED by the artist on the frontis with 12 full color double-page spread illustrations within. (Editorial: This book should have been originally published in 2 volumes: (1) MOBY DICK OR THE WHALE and (2) ALL YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT WHALES BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK. Seriously, however, I have come to the definitive conclusion, definitive for me, that is, that without doubt, the protagonist of this novel is Starbuck. After all, he is the one with the true conflict. As a devout Christian, does he allow the mad Ahab to endanger the crew beyond all hope and safety or as the First Mate, do whatever the Captain demands.).

Hardcover. Boardman Robinson Ilustrador. Two quarto volumes (7-1/2" x 10") bound in full dark sheepskin with gilt lettering on the spines. Copy #818 of 1000 with color and black-and-white plates after paintings by Boardman Robinson and SIGNED by the artist on the colophon page. One of the most difficult books of the press to obtain in decent condition because of the tendency of the leather to dry. When copies are seen, usually the binding is so dry it is crumbling. The limitation of 1000 copies is not stated, nor is the typical limitation of 1500 copies stated, but a letter from the publisher, George Macy, to a subscriber in another copy we handled explained the limitation (not included here). Note from the publisher, though not the Monthly Letter, laid in. The leather is still supple with solid coloring. The spines are faded with some wear to the tips, and there's slight edgewear but much less than normally encountered. Very Good, lacking the slipcase. A better example than most copies offered for sale.

First edition of Rockwell Kent's profusely illustrated edition of the great American novel. Octavo, original black cloth decorated in gilt, illustrated throughout by Rockwell Kent. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Ann Busby by Rockwell Kent." In very good condition. A bright example. Initially panned by critics and readers when published in 1851, "in the 20th century Moby Dick would be rediscovered and acknowledged as possibly the greatest of all American novels" (Chronology of American Literature). The artist Rockwell Kent did more than provide the illustrations for this landmark editionhe designed the entire book. "His energy, many-sided activities and preoccupation with integrated book design made him one of the best known American illustrators of his time" (Harthan, 247).
