This (first) volume has pink-tinged damp stains: at the upper front corner, decreasing in size to about page 8 and again increasing in size from about page 500 to the end; at the spine, from the upper edge, from the title page, to about page 100. at the spine, from the lower edge, to about page 50, and again from about page 200 increasing in size to the end of the book where the lower edge and lower page corners are affected too. The front board of is slightly warped and the rear board in damp-stained; Volume II: xvii, 548 pages. Decorative red cloth boards, gilt, with lightlly worn corners, and at the spine head and foot. Condition: Volume I: Fair; Volume II: Very Good. An attractive set. Size: 8vo.

Attractive two volume set in bright red cloth lettered and decorated in gilt and black, 588 + 548 pages plus publisher's ads. Very good condition with a touch of edge rubbing and light shelf soil, gilt lettering on spine just a little less bright than the front cover lettering, good hinges, firm text blocks, lightly age toned but very clean pages, name neatly written on the preliminary blank of each volume, no other names or markings. Hard Cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Each hardcover, H 22.25cm x L 14.25cm. Handsome full leather bindings; spines decorated with five slightly raised bands delineating six compartments which in turn have gilt tooling for four compartments with gilt lettered maroon title label and black volume label in other two compartments; slender gilt tooling to board edges. Some scuffing to spines and boards; Volume I's spine tailband unthreading. Marbled edges; marbled endpapers with both volumes' front pastedowns having patches of peeling presumably from removed bookplates; each volumes' title page has past owner's elaborate black ink name stamp "P.J. Maxwell" at their top right. Toning and foxing throughout both volumes with a few page corners creased from fold-downs. VOLUME I: 548 pages; pencil notations on rear flyleaf verso. VOLUME II: 520 pages; a few chips to pages 519-520 causing slight text loss; antiquarian ink writing and blotting to rear flyleaf with some pencil calculations as well. Bindings are firm. P.J. Maxwell was a mid-19th century resident of Columbus, Mississippi. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 1836 first English edition Richard Bentley hardbacks, two volume set with sixteen plates; tan leather spines, with black titling band and gilt decoration, and leather quarters, marbled boards and page edges. The main fault with these books is splitting to spine edges of the cover. It is not total, the bottom 3 inches of 1 from the base which extend half an inch into the spine as an horizontal split and more slightly the top two inches has cracking evident, these splits are on one side. Vol 2 is splitting for about 3 inches from the top on one edge. Aged but clean condition, foxing, name inside front covers but feps have been pasted down to cover this), sound binding, some scuffing to leather edges, some general spine wear (rubs and scratches) and rubbed edge and corners. no dj; Vol 1 has 548 pages, Vol 2 has 520 with index. With 16 b&w engraved plates, as called for. Covers generally bright with minor scuffing to boards; rubbed edges; Vol. 2 has fraying to spine top and part of title label missing. Bindings sound. Light foxing and browning to ends, and to margins of plates (one or two plates have foxing over the image). Some creased corners. Book plate of Robert Carter Esq inside front covers. A Good+ set.

Two volumes. [2], 548; [2], 520 p. 16 plates. Contemporary bindings in dark blue morocco. The boards panelled with a wide twisted ribbon roll inside a two line roll. The spines gilt between wide flat bands, lettered in the second and fourth compartments. Minor shelf wear only. The text is clean and tight with light offsetting from the plates. A handsome set.
