Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. Printed in Great Britain. First American Edition. [Stated, with date, on the copyright page.] First Printing. List of Illustrations (19 black-and-white photographs), Biographical Table, Acknowledgments, Introduction, Index; xiii, 288 pages. Prospectus laid-in. The original black cloth is in excellent shape with only one bumped corner and a partial-wrinkle to the pale-blue title block on the spine, apparently from publishing; the gilt lettering is as bright as when first issued. [Please see multiple images of the actual book.] The interior is fresh and bright, crisp and clean. A small bookseller's label (the same as that printed on the prospectus) is on the front pastedown. The original pictorial dustjacket shows hardly any rubbing, except to the sunned spine which has a couple of tiny chips at the head; one corner is bumped and there is a minor patch of spotting on the rear panel. The prospectus---an original advance announcement that came with the book from Vincent Stuart---is still here and, interestingly, lists a price of $7.50, whereas the price on this unclipped dustjacket is $6.50. Maurice Nicoll was one of the earliest exponents of psychological medicine and, after WWI, drawing on his earlier training under Carl Jung, did valuable work as a pioneer in the new psychological treatment of shell-shock. A meeting with Ouspensky in 1921 changed the direction of his life and led to study under Gurdjieff, after which he devoted himself to teaching Gurdjieff's System. The author, Dr Nicoll's secretary for fourteen years, aims to depict his life "as he himself described it to those who were close to him." Using Nicoll's own letters and diaries, memories, and family correspondence, emphasis is placed on events which had the most meaning for his life when viewed in light of the whole. [From the dustjacket.] My late father was, himself, an active member of a Gurdjieff circle in New York City, contributed to the literature and took part in radio discussions with other senior Gurdjieff students John Pentland and Larry Morris about the then recently published "Meetings with Remarkable Men." As with every book from my father's collection, tipped in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly---domestic sales sent with 'delivery confirmation' tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking. Please note that, due to COVID-19, overseas shipping may incur unusual delays.
