Manuel Álvarez Bravo (* 1902 - 2002, mexikanischer Fotograf, begann 1922 mit dem Fotografieren und wurde in den 1920er Jahren durch die Bekanntschaft mit Tina Modotti in seiner Entscheidung bestärkt, Berufsfotograf zu werden, zumal sie ihn auch mit dem Werk von Edward Weston konfrontierte. Bravo wurde zum Fotografen zahlreicher mexikanischer Maler u.a. für das Magazin Mexican Folk Ways. 1931 erwarb das Museum of Modern Art in New York City einige seiner Arbeiten. 1938-40 nahm er an mehreren von André Breton organisierten Ausstellungen teil. Nach 1943 war er Lehrer für Fotografie an der Zentralschule für Plastische Künste, hatte während dieser Zeit auch Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen. 1955 wurde er an der richtungweisenden Ausstellung "Family of Man" von Edward Steichen beteiligt. Die bedeutendsten Arbeiten von Álvarez Bravo sind sozialkritische Fotoserien mit klarer Formensprache. Aber auch mit freien Figurendarstellungen, die oft symbolisch-fantastische Anklänge bieten, wurde er über Mexiko und Lateinamerika hinaus berühmt. Das vorliegende Buch ist die definitive Monografie zum Werk Bravos, der zu den bedeutendsten lateinamerikanischen Fotografen der letzten fünfzig Jahre zählt.
