Bright red Victorian pictorial publisher's cloth, w/ illust. of herons and lotos pond, gilt & black Egyptian Revival inspired borders, illustrated gilt spine, a.e.g. (minor bumping to corners, shelfwear, light rubbing), still VG bright copy from library of Eva W. Frank, w/ ownership marking dated 1888 on ffep. Early printing of this nicely executed anthology of essays, short stories, and verse from members of the famed New York Lotos Club a gentleman's club originally founded in 1870 and drawing their name from the famed "The Lotos-Eaters" poem by Tennyson (not a member). Individual works making their appearance include "An encounter with an interviewer" by Twain; "Some Southern reminiscences" by Whitelaw Reid; "Fairy Gold" by John Brougham; "A Fatal Fortune" by Wilkie Collins; "In Echo Canon" by Noah Brooks, and even "Miracle of the Fishes" by noted naturalist Robert Roosevelt, uncle to President Theodore Roosevelt. Women were not allowed to join the club until 1976 when the its' constitution was amended.
