This volume is a First Edition with the appropriate white 'GHD' scrip contained within the black octagonal colophon, and GHD symbol is directly under the copyright notice, a general George H. Doran Company practice beginning around the year 1925. "Powerful Drama - Subtle Psychology. This amazing drama of a woman's struggle in the exotic atmosphere of a far country stands out as Mr. Maugham's most striking theatrical success. The story is never lacking in suspense and breathless incident. The dialogue is crisp and trenchant. Dramatized from one of his most famous stories, it presents a startling picture of the mind of a woman under the stress of violent and unusual emotional strain. As played by Katherine Cornell, as printed here, it stands out as one of the finest plays of our day." - from the rear outer jacket.
