Green coloured boards with gilt coloured titles to the backstrip. Colour illustrated dustwrapper, same illustration as for the frontispiece, with black and red coloured titles to the front panel and backstrip. The biography of Empress Wu Tsertien, who, in the seventh century became the Empress of China. Once the mistress of the Emperor Taitsung, who through charm, despotic use of power, murder  up to and including her own children and grandchildren  wielded immense power up to almost to a death at 83. Rubbing of the back strip edges and of the book corners. Age toning of the text block edges and pages; and, there are the occasional right-hand corner of the text which has become dogeared. Some stains to the lower text edge and foxing spots to the top text edge. Chipping of the dustwrapper corners; and the corners of the top back strip edge have split. Creasing and rubbing of the dustwrapper edges with foxing seen  more noticeable on the rear panel. Some moisture marks to the rear panel which can also be seen to the verso. He had an informal style in both Chinese and English, and he made compilations and translations of classic Chinese texts into English. Some of his writings criticized the racism and imperialism of the West. This book is a novelized life of Wu Tsertien, an Empress in the Tang Dynasty.
