(Hardcover, 1910). 1910 1st edition thus. 4to (190 x 253mm). Pp150. Excellent colour plates of paintings by G.D. Armour, teg, two edges rough-cut. Red cloth, spine titled in gilt, gilt border and vignette to upper board. Rather foxed, spine shaken, covers rather stained and worn, spine discoloured. Good copy. R.S. Surtees' novel Handley Cross contains a series of "Lectors", where Surtees gives vent to his views on hunting, hounds and horsemanship in the person of Mr. Jorrocks. These essays have little connection with the story in the novel and have been published here independently, partly for their own sake, and partly as a vehicle for G.D. Armour's excellent illustrations. The illustrations are full-page colour plates. .

Cloth. Condición: Very Good. G. Denholm Armour Ilustrador. First edition. A first edition copy of this humorous work by R.S. Surtees, featuring his well-known Cockney character, Mr. Jorrocks. Illustrated throughout. A humorous collection of lectures by English editor and writer Robert Smith Surtees, featuring his well-known character, Mr. Jorrocks. Mr. Jorrocks is a humorously vulgar, but good-tempered Cockney grocer who, in this work, provides a wealth of knowledge about agriculture, horses, cattle, and other items of interest.Robert Smith Surtees was a nineteenth-century English writer and editor, and his writing is often compared to that of William Makepeace Thackeray, William Morris, and Charles Dickens. Indeed, his work does sometimes resemble that of Charles Dickens, with its vigorousness and keen social perception. This work in particular is bound in the publisher's red cloth, and contains twenty-five tipped-in illustrated plates, all in colour. Collated and complete. Also containing the bookplate of Henry Courtney Brocklehurst, of the Brocklehurst family of Swythamley Park, to the front pastedown. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart, with the spine faded and bumping to the head and tail. A few dark marks to the spine. Bookplate of Henry Courtney Brocklehurst to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good. book.

Cloth. Condición: Very Good Indeed. G. Denholm Armour Ilustrador. A profusely illustrated work, with lectors taken from R. S Surtees original work 'Handley Cross'. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with gilt details to the spine and front board. Written by Robert Smith Surtees. Surtees was a journalist and novelist of the 19th century. Interestingly his work was not incredibly popular with his contemporaries, and his remained one of the lesser known authors of the 19th century. This being said, unlike many of his literary counterparts, Surtees has maintained a small yet strong fan-base, with the R. S. Surtees Society established in 1979 to promote and celebrate the work of this often overlooked author. Illustrated with 25 tipped-in colour plates by George Denholm Armour. Collated complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally generally smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine, with rubbing to the extremities resulting in a small amount of loss. Light fading to the spine. Light offsetting and spotting to the front and rear pastedown and endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the occasional spot. Very Good Indeed. book.
