Twenty-eight distinguished contributors describe the England that Dr. Johnson knew: its habits, clothes, and amusements; its institutions--the Church, the Army and Navy, the Law; its painting, building, furniture, sculpture, and music; its achievements in industry and exploration and science and farming; its methods in education and poor-law relief; its newspapers, bookshops, coffee-houses, theatres, inns, turnpikes, prisons, hospitals. Politics alone are not dealt with. The period covered is roughly the sixty years between 1730, just before Johnson came to London, and 1790, just after his death.

Twenty eight contributors describe, in these 2 volumes, England, it's social life and institutions, in the age of Dr. Johnson, - between 1730 - 1784. The Law, The Navy, the Church, industry, exploration, science & farming, education, poor law relief, music, theatres, newspaper, coffee houses etc. But politics in that time is not described. Bound in blue cloth with gilt titles, the text pages of these two volumes are clean & legible. The end papers show slight foxing and darkening- the cut page edge are considerably darkend wtih age. The paper jackets are whole, the top edges being slightly ragged with one small tear in one. The spine area of the jackets is considerably darkend but the front covers are in good condition. All proceeds from the sale of this item go to Amnesty International.
