Original publisher's green cloth binding with gilt lettering on front cover and spine and gilt decoration on front cover. 6" x 8 1/2." 456 pages, complete. Many black-and-white illustrations and a frontispiece portrait of Nasmyth, complete. Four additional pages in the back advertising other books. Table of Contents in front and Index in back. Former owner's bookplate tipped in on verso of front free endpaper: "Z Deshaw." Purple stamp with "H4, 1007" on a front flyleaf. Pages are very clean and intact. Covers are clean and intact overall. Binding is tight except for a crack along the top of the front outer joint measuring about 1 3/4." Some wear at the corners, edges, and front and back outer joints. Some chipping at the head of the spine. Tail of the spine has minimal chipping. A Very Good copy. Autobiography of James Nasmyth (1808-1890), a Scottish engineer, inventor, philosopher, and artist. A Renaissance man of the sciences, Nasmyth made several inventions and is best-known for inventing the steam hammer. He retired at the age of 48 but continued his scientific pursuits by taking up astronomy and photography as hobbies. Nasmyth made detailed renditions of the moon on paper as well as plaster models, the latter of which he cast under artificial lighting and subsequently photographed to simulate the lighting on the moon.
