Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. A harmonious and notably fresh set of the four Harry Palmer novels, comprising The IPCRESS File, Horse Under Water, Funeral in Berlin and Billion Dollar Brain - largely Fine, in similarly excellent unclipped dustwrappers. The IPCRESS File is a second impression (issued within a month of the first printing), Horse Under Water a 1970s impression, and the final two volumes are first impressions. The IPCRESS File is Fine (previous owner's six word signature/inscription to the rear pastedown) in a Near Fine+ wrapper (a touch of toning to the spine, top-edge and folds). Horse Under Water (sixth impression, 1977) is Fine (a tiny ink mark to the fore-edge of the page block) in a Fine wrapper. Funeral in Berlin (first impression) is Near Fine (a little faint spotting/marking to the edge of the page block) in a Near Fine wrapper (lightly rubbed to the spine tips and corners). Billion Dollar Brain (first impression) is Fine in a Near Fine wrapper - an unusually attractive example of a notoriously fragile foil wrapper. The dustwrappers are presented in removable, archival-quality Brodart protective covers. All orders are sent very carefully wrapped in bubble wrap and sturdy cardboard. Shipped free within the United Kingdom; a heavy set that will incur additional shipping (to cost) outside the UK.

Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. A handsome first edition, first impression set of the four Harry Palmer novels, comprising The IPCRESS File (1962), Horse Under Water (1963), Funeral in Berlin (1964) and Billion Dollar Brain (1966). All four books are Fine or very nearly Fine - firm and square binding, sharp boards, and crisp and clean. The original dustwrappers are bright and vibrant and Very Good or better. The IPCRESS File is Fine in a Very Good unclipped first-state dustwrapper (15/- net stated and no reviews) with light wear and a line of browning to the extreme edges; a little moisture rippling to (at most) the bottom 2cm of the upper panel only. Horse Under Water (second-state with black endpapers) is Near Fine+ (a little toning to the edge of the page block and a small mark to the top-edge; previous owner's tiny signature to the verso of the ffep) in a Very Good unclipped (16s net stated) dustwrapper with a touch of rubbing to the edges, unbroken laminate bubbles to either side of the spine, and a little lifting of the laminate along the top-edge. Funeral in Berlin is Near Fine+ (toning to the edge of the page block and a trace of dustiness to the top-edge) in a Very Good+ unclipped dustwrapper which is lightly rubbed to the corners and spine and with a little wear to the head of the spine. Billion Dollar Brain is Near Fine+ (modest toning to the edge of the page block) in a Very Good clipped dustwrapper which is rubbed to the spine tips and corners, with a few tiny nicks and some wrinkling to the extremities and folds. The dustwrappers are presented in removable, archival-quality Brodart protective covers. All orders are sent very carefully wrapped in bubble wrap and sturdy cardboard. Shipped free within the United Kingdom; a heavy set that will incur additional shipping (to cost) outside the UK.

Hardcover. Condición: Very good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very good. Jacket designs by Raymond Hawkey. Ilustrador. First edition set. First editions, first impressions. 4 vol. 8vo. Original boards. Dust-jackets, all correctly priced. An unusually good set of the first quartet of Deighton's "Harry Palmer" novels (although the character is never actually named in the books); increasingly difficult to find as a set and in comparable condition, here with the original crossword slip in the second book as called for. The stories' popularity received an additional bolstering from the three film versions made starring Michael Caine, and have enjoyed ongoing success for fans of spy fiction, not least as a counterpoint to Fleming's James Bond novels. IPCRESS File: an excellent copy; jacket with just a little rubbing and very minor toning to spine, overall very good. Horse Under Water: with original loose crossword clean, a very good; jacket with usual slight toning to spine, overall very good. Funeral In Berlin: a couple of small tape marks to boards; jacket a little browned at top edge with slight toning to spine, slightly rubbed at head of spine, otherwise very good. Billion-Dollar Brain: very good copy of the book; jacket with some rubbing to lower edge and foot of spine, some minor creasing and scratching, otherwise very good. Book.

An inscribed first US edition, first printing, of the Ipcress File, together with first UK editions, first impressions, of the three following novels in the Harry Palmer series. The Ipcress File's title page is inscribed, "For Chris & Malcolm best wishes - Len Deighton". Billion-Dollar Brain was originally published in America two months prior to the UK edition. Deighton's first novel, the Ipcress File was first published in London in 1962. The US edition followed a year later and retains Raymond Hawkey's striking jacket design, which Deighton much admired. The design "went against the prejudice of the book trade at the time in that it was monochromatic, used discreet typography and a photographic rather than a drawn illustration" (Milward-Oliver). This aesthetic was continued for the works that followed, the Billion-Dollar Brain with the additional feature of being attractively printed on metallic paper. Milward-Oliver, pp. 27-30. 4 works, octavo. Original black, red, and blue boards, spines lettered in orange and gilt, final three works with illustrated front covers and endpapers. With dust jackets. Funeral in Berlin with ownership inscription and ink and blind stamps, dated 1964, of one Robin Duncan. Bumps to board edges, foxing to edges of Funeral in Berlin, all contents clean; jackets a little creased, occasional nick and mark, unclipped: a very good set in like jackets.
