Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. vii, 309, [1, blank] pp; 1 leaf of publisher's ads. Original cloth. Very Good. First Edition. The eleven essays are: The Influence of Darwinism on Philosophy; Nature and Its Good: A Conversation; Intelligence and Morals; The Experimental Theory of Knowledge; The Intellectualist Criterion for Truth; A Short Catechism Concerning Truth; Beliefs and Existences; Experience and Objective Idealism; The Postulate of Immediate Empiricism; "Consciousness" and Experience; The Significance of the Problem of Knowledge. The first essay--"The Influence of Darwinism on Philosophy"--was "a lecture in a course of public lectures on 'Charles Darwin and His influence on Science,' given at Columbia University in the winter and spring of 1909. Reprinted from the Popular Science Monthly for July, 1909 [pp. 90-98]." The title of Dewey's essay in Popular Science Monthly was "Darwin's Influence upon Philosophy". In the January 29, 1909, issue of "Science", there is a notice about the series of 9 lectures at Columbia. The date of Dewey's lecture was March 26, 1909, and its title was "Darwinism and Modern Philosophy." COPY OF THE BIOLOGIST WILLIAM MORTON WHEELER, with his signature on the title page (see photo). Wheeler--best known for his life-long study of ants--was a philosophically-minded biologist. I quote from the obituary of Wheeler in the journal "Science" (June 4, 1937): Alfred N. Whitehead "regarded Wheeler as one of the greatest men he had ever met. A student has written the following to Mrs. Wheeler: 'In a recent lecture, Professor Whitehead characterized him as the only man he had ever known who would have been both worthy and able to sustain a conversation with Aristotle.' In 1939 Wheeler's book "Essays in Philosophical Biology" was published posthumously (Wheeler died in 1937).
