First edition of this history and guide book to Knole, the ancestral seat of the Sackville family, built in the second half of the fifteenth century and enlarged to its present impressive size in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Its author, John Bridgman, House Steward to the Dowager Duchess of Dorset, provides good coverage of the extensive picture collection, with measurements for all the principal paintings, and biographical notes on the house?s successive owners from the fifteenth century onwards. He concludes with reprinting a then recent obituary notice of the last Sackville owner in the male line, the 4th Duke of Dorset (1793-1815), a promising youth whose university career was interrupted by a severe eye injury incurred while playing real tennis, and who soon afterwards died from a fall while hunting in Ireland. Upcott, i, 632*-633*. 8vo. viii + 164pp, 4 engraved plates from drawings by Bridgman dated 1796 (of which 3 are perspective views and one illustrates architectural details), 5 engraved plates with Sackville coats of arms. Contemporary calf, neatly rebacked using original spine. Occasional marginal spotting.Nineteenth century pencil ownership inscription of Thomas L.Devitt (evidently Sir Thomas Lane Devitt, Bart. (1839-1923), shipowner) on preliminary blank leaf.
