The land ain't good for nothin' but help hold the world together." There is land rich and poor in New Hampshire, but the people are its gold. Mr. Poole has lived among them for thirty~five years, and he has put them into a book that is like a journey to an unspoiled world. His opening chapters refresh the reader on a history as rough as the loggers who first exploited the state's forests, but as disciplined as the pupils of the schoolmaster who said, "If you try any funny business I'll whale the lot of you, and if that don't help, I'll follow you home and lick the folks that trained you." Mr. Poole describes New Hampshire today and yesterday, in terms of the people, customs, the traditions, and the eccentricities which have made it what it is. Along with the pages of anecdote and legend is the record of sober, hard work and mighty accomplishment which reveals what New Hampshire people and New Hampshire genius have contributed America. They coined the phrase to talk turkey" in New Hampshire, and, their ability to do this is part of our national heritage. And in addition to all the foregoing, Mr. Poole's final chapters provide the specific information the present~day tourist and vacationer need to enjoy themselves to the full in this vast mountain playground in the heart of Yankee New England.
