The Captain began an immediate clean-up of the area destroying all evidence and after his investigation claimed it was the result of a thwarted homosexual affair. Charles C. Thompson II was born on May 18, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee, USA as Charles Clinton Thompson II. Mr. Thompson, a Navy combat veteran of the Vietnam War, was exposed to the toxic defoliant Agent Orange in the 1960s during a military assignment as a land-based spotter for naval gunfire in Southeast Asia. He was a producer and writer, known for 60 Minutes (1968), A Glimpse of Hell (2001) and 60 Minutes Wednesday (1999). He uncovered evidence pointing to a drug overdose as the cause of singer Elvis Presley's death. Charles C. Thompson II was a TV news producer who in 1991 helped expose mustard gas experiments on thousands of unwitting U.S. Navy recruits during World War II. He returned from the war ostensibly unscathed, but the effects of Agent Orange would surface nearly 30 years and forced his early retirement from CBS in 1995. A Glimpse of Hell: The Explosion on the USS Iowa and Its Cover-Up is a nonfiction book of investigative journalism, written by Charles C. Thompson II and published in 1999. The book describes the USS Iowa turret explosion that took place on April 19, 1989, and the subsequent investigations that tried to determine the cause. The explosion aboard the United States Navy battleship Iowa killed 47 of the turret's crewmen. Soon after the explosion, Thompson was informed by an Iowa crewman that the Navy was conducting a dishonest investigation into the cause of the tragedy. Thompson, a producer for the television newsmagazine 60 Minutes, later produced several television reports which disputed the Navy's conclusions as to what had caused the explosion. Based on his work for the 60 Minutes reports plus further investigation on his own, Thompson wrote A Glimpse of Hell. Thompson's book concluded that the Navy had orchestrated a cover-up to conceal the true cause of the explosion.
