CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: These Civil War letters from four Massachusetts brothers is considered one of the finest of Union solder memoirs and of the best sources on the common soldier. This book is based on the letters and diaries of the author and his three brothers who served variously in the 1st Mass Heavy Artillery and the 22nd Mass Infantry. However, this book has a particular publishing history that has resulted in some confusion. Four Brothers in Blue began in July 1896 as a serial in the Maine Bugle, a magazine published in Rockland, Maine. The story, however, ran only thru chapter X and up to the Battle of Chancellorsville, when the magazine ceased publication in October 1898. Carter had the complete manuscript re-set and published in an edition of 100 copies this being the so-called Perfect Edition and is cited by Wright Howes in his bibliography, USIANA. Yet because Carter wished to preserve the pictorial content from the first 10 chapters as it appeared in the Maine Bugle but was omitted from the published version, he had about one hundred additional sets of these magazine chapters bound together with the remaining text as printed in the published version thus being imperfect . In his introduction to the reprint edition, John Carroll quotes a Carter letter in which Carter described the genesis of this separate printing using the original periodical sheets that resulted in the non-continuous pagination. This separate edition unknown to Howes, has been called the Imperfect Edition and is, according to Carroll, much rarer. This imperfect edition is complete in every respect and includes the illustration plates that Carter preferred. Approximately 80 copies were sold, and few of these have survived. Long considered a classic, Frank Vandiver in his Forward to the reprint edition, compares it on the Confederate side with E.P. Alexander s Military Memoirs, and Richard Taylor s Destruction and Reconstruction and quotes Stephen Vincent Benet calling it a remarkable first-hand account. Rarely offered for sale, in either edition, this copy is in great collector s condition. REFERENCES: DORN Mass #5 and Vol.II #1646; NEVINS I pg 67: Simply unique, for this volume is composed largely of letters from the field of four Massachusetts brothers; all served in the Army of the Potomac. HOWES H193 b , citing the edition of 100; EICHER 459: Their letters, woven together with narrative by Robert Carter, form an unbroken chronicle of life in the army throughout some of the heaviest fighting of the eastern theater. Because the brothers were observant and literate, the work is a splendid source for life on the march, in camp, and in battle with the Massachusetts men The letters are filled with interesting minutiae such as stories of Philadelphia s Cooper Shop, captures of prisoners, an execution, a narrow escape from capture, rearguard fighting, drunkenness, camp music, the death of friends, rotten food, and numerous points of interest on many battlefields. MULLINS/REED #13: Perhaps the best of the personal reminiscences, this volume, comprising letters written from the field by four Massachusetts brothers who served in the Army of the Potomac, provides a vivid picture of life of a Union soldier. There is an accompanying narrative by the author.
