Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. This is "Eros and Civilization, a Philosophical Inquiry into Freud" by Herbert Marcuse. It is the 1993 tenth printing of the Beacon Press paperback Reprint. On the rear cover is a critical assessment of the book by Clyde Kluckhohn, writing for "The New York Times" : |> Philosophical critiques of psychoanalysis have been rare. Almost all of those that have appeared hitherto have been either undisguised attacks or , equally evident, defenses. This book takes psychoanalysis seriously but not as unchallengeable dogma. "Eros and Civilization" is a stirring book and a cheering (though in no sense naive) book.Except for Ernest Jones' two notable volumes on Freud and his life, this strikes the reviewer as the most significant general treatment of psychoanalytic theory since Freud himself ceased publication.<| Many consider this to be Marcuse's most important book. ********************************* TITLE : Eros and Civilization, a Philosophical Inquiry into Freud / AUTHOR : Herbert Marcuse (1898 - 1979) / IMPRINT : Beacon Press / PLACE : Boston / DATE : (1993) / EDITION : Reprint - 10th Beacon Printing / DETAILS : Trade paperback; contains the Preface to the original 1966 edition, a Preface to this edition, an Introduction and footnotes; xxviii + 277 pages; approx. 5 3/8" x 8"; printed glued wraps. ******************************** CONDITION VERY GOOD This is a previously owned book that remains clean and presentable, with the following particulars noted :: EXTERIOR -- No reading crease to spine; a small smudge displays on the back cover, else the cover is clean and attractive; the text-block edges have very mild weathering (looks like barely there vague foxing), else clean. / BINDING -- Solid / INTERIOR -- Clean and free of marking.

Price of $3.95 on the front flap of the dust jacket. ANB, Douglas Kellner, "Marcuse, Herbert". Marcuse was a philosopher in the same vein as Adorno and Horkheimer, and undertook studies on Marxism, Freud's theory, and the structure of society and social organization. The author wrote this book while lecturing on Soviet Marxism during the fifties. The book is an exploration of the intersection of Marxist and Freudian theories. Marcuse makes use of Freud's categories to provide "a critique of bourgeois society". In Eros and Civilization, Marcuse envisions a society in which "repressive tendencies are held in check and the possibilities for self-fulfillment are enhanced". The book was well-received by critics and it became a galvanizer for certain intellectual disciplines in the latter 1960's when revolt against establishment culture became mainstream. A nice copy of one of Marcuse's most significant works. A Near Fine book in a Very Good dust jacket with a closed tear on the front panel and a few hints of edge wear.

First UK edition. 8vo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, dust jacket (faint partial offsetting to endpapers, some light spotting to edges of text block, otherwise a near fine copy). London, Routledge and Kegan Paul Ltd. One of the most influential products of the Frankfurt School of Critical Theory, Eros and Civilization formulated a philosophical system blending Hegelian logic with aspects of Marxist revolutionary praxis, along with an inversion of the concept of sublimation in Freudian psychoanalytic theory in which the dialectical progression of history is expression as a struggle against the repression of human desire.
