Hard Cover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. First edition. No jacket. Minor loss to spine head, top page ridge lightly stained. 1933 Hard Cover. xii, 311 pp. The Dragon Murder Case is a novel in a series by S. S. Van Dine about fictional detective Philo Vance. It was also adapted to a film version in 1934, starring Warren William as Vance. A guest at an estate in northern Manhattan (Inwood Hill Park) dives into the swimming pool and disappears. His murder brings up references to a mythological dragon which is said to prey on the imprudent, but Philo Vance uses his knowledge of both dragons and criminals to demonstrate whodunit. The estate in the novel was based on Tryon Hall, built in 1907 by C. K. G. Billings, a retired president of the Chicago Coke and Gas Company. In 1917 he sold the mansion to John D. Rockefeller Jr. The mansion burned down in 1926, and Rockefeller developed the property, and others, into Fort Tryon Park, which he then donated to New York City.

Hardcover. 19.5 x 13.5 cm. 311pp. Black cloth in dust jacket and slipcase. FEL slip describing the work laid-in. Small faint stain to the jacket spine. The publisher "The First Edition Library" produced high quality facsimiles of first editions of many classic works. This is one of the mystery novels published in conjunction with Otto Penzler, a publisher and the proprietor of the Mystery Book Shop in New York. These works differ from a true first only in that they come in a slipcase and that they have a small statement of edition on the copyright page. Any typos and defects are perserved from the original. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket and slipcase.

Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Vintage Hardcover with Scarce DJ, 1933 Grosset & Dunlap 311 pages. Near Fine, in a VG DJ. Just a hint of shelf/edge wear to black cloth boards with red titles - corners sharp. Moderate shelf/edge wear and a few closed tears to original unclipped DJ - now in mylar. No previous owner markings - all pages are clean, unmarked and lightly toned (due to cheap paper). Endpapers are clean and unmarked. S. S. Van Dine (also styled S.S. Van Dine) is the pseudonym used by American art critic Willard Huntington Wright (October 15, 1888 ? April 11, 1939) when he wrote detective novels. He went on to write twelve mysteries in total, though their author's identity was unmasked by 1928. The first few books about the distinctive Philo Vance (who shared with his creator a love of art and a disdain for the common touch) were so popular that Wright became wealthy for the first time in his life. His readership was diverse and worldwide. A very handsome pre-war copy in DJ. LOC SSS-03.
