Johan August Strindberg. Swedish: (22 January 1849 - 14 May 1912) was a Swedish playwright, novelist, poet, essayist and painter. A prolific writer who often drew directly on his personal experience, Strindberg's career spanned four decades, during which time he wrote over sixty plays and more than thirty works of fiction, autobiography, history, cultural analysis, and politics. A bold experimenter and iconoclast throughout, he explored a wide range of dramatic methods and purposes, from naturalistic tragedy, monodrama, and history plays, to his anticipations of expressionist and surrealist dramatic techniques.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. First Edition in English, translated from the Swedish by Edwin Bjorkman, with a detailed introduction by the translator. ***Very good in dark burgundy cloth gilt. Corners and edges slightly worn and bumped. Cloth slightly marked on front board. Rear endpaper has production crease. Top edge gilt. Neat contemporaneous ownership inscription on ffep. 30mm x 196mm ~ 86 pages. ***The true first edition in English. *** 'Only recently has Strindberg begun to receive the recognition that he deserves. His obsessional treatments of insanity, sexual domination and the psychological warfare between men and women provoked incomprehension and abhorrence during his life-time. But now his plays have taken on a new relevance and directness. He is rightly acclaimed as a pioneer of twentieth century theatre and one of the world's great dramatists.'
