Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good Minus. 1st Edition. First Edition ( 'First published in the United States in 1971' ). You can see the covers of the book in the photos. They're very clean. There is a minimum of wear, a couple of nicks on the front cover, a mild bump to the front bottom corner, a little crinkling at the spine ends, a very light crease above the rear bottom corner. The edges and corners are in solid shape. The green lettering on the spine is very bright. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The interior of the book is in very solid shape. I have scrolled through the pages several times without finding any instances of soiling. The pages are clearly toned. There is a teeny tiny crease at the bottom corner of some early pages. There are no placeholder creases, no conspicuous creasing. There are no markings. No attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The jacket is rated Very Good Minus. The Minus is solely due to the tear off the top edge of the front cover which has a tiny bit of loss at its middle. There are no other tears. The jacket is very clean. The flaps are in very good shape. The top edge of the rear flap appears to be a little toned or tanned. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. From the dust jacket: 'In recent years, Peter Haining has become one of the best and most popular anthologists of the occult. The Clans Of Darkness is the natural successor to his brilliant collection of Irish supernatural tales, The Wild Night Company. Every bit is eerie, but shaded with a burr rather than a brogue, this volume refracts the essence of Scottish supernatural imaginings through a darkened prism of uneasiness. Rooted in the misty moors of a superstitious past, these twenty-one horrific stories, including pieces by Sir Walter Scott, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Algernon Blackwood, A. J. Cronin, and many others, are appropriately headed by Angus Wilson's able foreword, and the whole is expertly framed by the editor's thoughtful commentary.'.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Later ublished in 1971 by Victor Gollancz Ltd. A4 Typed MS. pp. 4; 3., recto only. Both the introduction and foreword corrected in pen by the publisher or probably Haining? Three typed signed letters from Giles Gordon at Victor Gollancz to Peter Haining at The Hideaway, Mill Lane, Birch Green, Nr Colchester, Essex written on headed notepaper from 14 Henrietta Street, London W.C.2. The first letter dated 29th June, 1970 and consisting of about 115 words passes on information from Wilson about agreeing to his fee and saying he must read the stories first and that as he is 'frantically busy' he couldn't have it ready before September. Several notes on the letter in Haining's hand. The second letter addressed as above dated 21st September, 1970 consisting of about 92 words encloses a carbon of the foreword and says Wilson has asked for Haining to tone down the 'fulsome' remarks about him in the preface. The final letter addressed as above dated 30th September, 1970 and consisting of about 215 words in which Giles Gordon discusses a few changes and the dust jacket illustration and says it has now gone to the printers. He says he thinks it is impressive and is as good as 'The Wild Night Company' (Haining's book on Irish Terror Tales). He says he has cut down some of the 'estatic praise for the individual contributors as I think your enthusiasm rather ran away with you.' Peter Haining (1940-2007) was a prolific writer and editor on subjects ranging from crime and horror to witchcraft and fantasy. He became Editorial Director of the New English Library publishing house. Angus Wilson (1913-1991) English novelist and short story writer who in 1970 with Malcolm Bradbury established theÊMA creative writing courseÊat the University of East Anglia. Small punched hole on title page, otherwise very good. Very good.
