Were the commanders in Hawaii derelict in their duty when they failed to anticipate the raid on Pearl Harbor? Exactly how much did the United States know about Japanese intentions on the eve of Pearl Harbor? Six major investigations, including a marathon congressional inquest, failed to find conclusive answers to these questions. Climaxed by an almost hour~by~hour reconstruction of our last days of peace, The Broken Seal not only presents definitive answers but abounds in astounding revelations, including: How the U.S. Navy broke two of the Japanese navy's highest~security codes as early as 1926, only to "lose" both on the eve of the Pearl Harbor attack. Why the U.S. Navy refused to share the secret of its own code~breaking activities with the U.S. Army. How the Japanese gained invaluable information about American strategy and strength from a member of President Roosevelt's own Cabinet. How the treachery of two highly trusted American cryptologists enabled the Japanese to learn that the United States was cracking their codes. And how decoded messages which actually pinpointed Pearl Harbor as the target for attack were neglected until it was too late. The Broken Seal is one of those rare books which are as dramatically exciting as they are authoritative. Much in this significant story has never been told before~and much of it, too, has been misunderstood. Here for the first time is the whole secret history of Japanese and American code~breaking operations between 1921 and 1941~the fascinating progression of clandestine events which culminated tragically at Pearl Harbor.

Some very slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners very slightly bruised, not price clipped (42s), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy for its age. 441pp. 'Operation Magic' was the intelligence network built around America's main breakthrough in anti Japanese cryptanalysis prior to Pearl Harbor. Farago, well known for books like 'Patton: Ordeal and Triumph' and 'Burn after Reading', spent four of the war years in the Office of Naval Intelligence. He writes of spyies and spying, government, the military, and their personalities, H.O. Yardley cipher whiz whose gambling debts drove him to treason, Laurence Safford who kept the Navy's 'Magic' door open, the special roles of Hull and Stimson, Gen. Marshall, Adams. Schofield, Stark and Kimmel, 'presidential agent' Frank C. Walker, Sumner Welles, and especially President Roosevelt (whose advisers, Farago contends, kept him in the dark more often than not), as well as Japanese and European figures of the time. Hungarian American Ladislas Farago (1906-80), was a military historian and journalist who published a number of best-selling books on history and espionage during and after WWII.
