First edition, first impression. The autobiography was released in time for Bagnold's 80th birthday on 27 October 1969 and was received with praise from friends and reviewers. The actress Peggy Ashcroft told her that it was a "masterpiece in its truest meaning and you must feel very, very happy in it" (Sebba, p. 246). Her friend and renowned photographer Cecil Beaton wrote "In the book all her qualities are apparent; also her dislikeableness; she is not a nice person. But her honesty and strength of character are amazing" (Sebba, p. 247). Loosely inserted is a small note in manuscript: "Mrs Scoll I've gone to the lavatory", possibly in Bagnold's hand; Mrs Scoll was Bagnold's Scottish nurse in the last years of her life. The note to Scoll hints at the pain of her arthritis, for which she underwent surgery and received regular injections. Bagnold began her autobiography in 1968, after occasional attempts at writing one for almost ten years and in a time of loneliness after the death of her husband in 1962. Anne Sebba, Enid Bagnold: The Authorized Biography, 1986. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt on pink ground, publisher's device to front panel in gilt, green illustrated endpapers. With illustrated dust jacket. With 8 black and white photographic plates and illustrations in text. Booksellers' ticket of John Beal & Son, Brighton on front pastedown. Gift inscription to front free endpaper dated Christmas 1969, A very good copy, light rubbing to extremities, edges and endpapers foxed, in like dustjacket, spine sunned, slight nicks to spine ends and corners, top edge lightly rubbed and edges tanned.
