The wraps are in good condition (some crinkling along bottom edge, cover rubbing, residue of label at bottom of spine). 9 x 7, 447 pages, 34 ounces XX The original two-volume book, LAS ARTES POPULARES EN MEXICO (1921), accompanied the first exposition of Mexican popular arts in Mexico City and Los Angeles, California in celebration of the centennial of the War of Independence from Spain. The 1922 edition of the book, of which this 1980 edition is a reprint, integrated the text and B/W photographs of the two volumes. XX [Wikipedia] Gerardo Murillo Coronado, also known by his signature Dr. Atl (October 3, 1875 - August 15, 1964), was a Mexican painter and writer. He was actively involved in the Mexican Revolution in the Constitutionalist faction led by Venustiano Carranza. Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, he began studying painting at an early age, under Felipe Castro. At 21, Murillo entered the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City to further his studies. After demonstrating his talent, Murillo was awarded a grant in 1897 by the government of Porfirio Díaz to study painting in Europe. There he broadened his scope of learning, with study of philosophy and law at the University of Rome, and many trips to Paris to hear lectures on art given by Henri Bergson. His strong interest in politics led him to collaborate with the Socialist Party in Italy and work in the Avanti newspaper. In 1902 he was baptized Dr. Atl (the Nahuatl word for water) by Leopoldo Lugones. Dr. Atl became very active in Mexico when he returned. In 1906 he participated with Diego Rivera, Francisco de la Torre, Rafael Ponce de León and others in an exhibition sponsored by Alonso Cravioto and Luis Castillo Ledon, the editors of the magazine Savia Moderna. In 1906, Dr. Atl issued a manifesto calling for the development of a monumental public art movement in Mexico linked to the lives and interests of the Mexican people, a precursor of the Mexican Mural Movement launched in 1922. The winning faction of the Revolution rejected the Eurocentric emphasis of the Mexican government in the 19th and early 20th century and following the Revolution, there was a revival of interest in Mexico's rich indigenous past and the popular arts, including folk dance, music, arts and crafts. Dr. Atl and other artists arranged exhibits of the folk arts and performances of popular dance and music and Dr. Atl prepared a two-volume study, Folk Arts in Mexico, published by the Mexican government in 1922.

Sólo volumen primero y el más raro, ya que el volumen segundo fue reeditado en 1981 por el Instituto Nacional Indigenista. Gerardo Murillo, más conocido como "Doctor Atl", nació en 1875. Su seudónimo, que significa agua, lo tomó del náhuatl y el título de "médico", posiblemente de su padre, que era farmacéutico de oficio. Aunque su merecida fama lo adquirió como pintor, tuvo una marcada preferencia por lo que denominó "artes populares", actualmente uno de los objetos de estudio de la etnología. Las artes populares en México, es una joya bibliográfica. Fue publicado por primera vez en 1921 como texto de apoyo a la exposición de Arte Popular Mexicano que se realizó en las ciudades de México y Los Ángeles, California, con motivo del Centenario de la consumación de la Independencia. El texto refleja los conceptos que sostenían los intelectuales de la época sobre los indígenas y sus artes: estudiándolos se pueden valorar con gran precisión ciertas cualidades de una raza. ¿Cuáles son los que nos podrían revelar el estudio de las artes populares en México? Un gran sentimiento artístico, especialmente un fuerte sentimiento decorativo; una enorme resistencia física, un gran espíritu de asimilación, una habilidad manual admirable y una gran fantasía. La primera edición, realizada por la Editorial "CVLTVRA" se agotó rápidamente, siendo necesario publicar al año siguiente (1922) la segunda versión con una impresión superior, ilustraciones de mayor calidad y textos más amplios. El libro está ilustrado con excelentes fotografías, cada una enmarcada en un diseño que recuerda a los textiles o la cerámica. El texto consta de 26 capítulos: en los dos primeros, el Doctor Atl habla de la importancia del arte popular con especial énfasis en las manifestaciones artísticas o industriales de razas indígenas puras y razas mixtas o intermedias. En el capítulo dedicado a la Exposición menciona que canalizó el sentimiento público hacia una mejor comprensión del arte nacional, y las consecuencias comerciales y artísticas que de él se derivan son realmente importantes.
