Hardcover. Condición: Very Good-. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First Printing. 443 Pages. Stated First Printing. Dust jacket Not price-clipped. This excellent review of a somewhat unknown person important to American History is an ex-library book and thus has the dust jacket taped into and enclosed in a clear plastic case. The plastic case has remnants of stickers at the base of the spine and has some wearing on the front and rear covers. The interior book has three corners with worn areas on them, the remnants of the library use of it (stamps of the library name, where the library card emplacement was, and a few stickers) and has some underlining and page edge notes at various places within it. Outside of these, the printing is very readable, the black/white illustrations are well preserved and the binding is still sound and tight. This book will be carefully wrapped and boxed up and then sent right away to you from here in New Jersey and comes with our honest appreciation for your order.

Orphaned at age two, young Aaron Burr was raised by an uncle, was graduated from Princeton at seventeen, and interrupted his law studies for a distinguished military career during the Revolution, attaining the rank of colonel. After the war, he established a successful law practice in Manhattan, where his home, "Richmond Hill," run by the two Theodosias ~his wife and daughter~ became a center of culture and elegance. He entered politics in the New York state assembly, became state attorney general in 1789, U.S. senator in 1791, and Vice President in 1801. His preeminent social advantages, his energy and abilities raise the question: why did the career that rapidly lifted him to "within a hair's breadth of the Presidency of the United States" later plunge him into a treason trial, exile, and disgrace? ~ Much of the disrepute surrounding the name of Aaron Burr derives from the sensational "conspiracy"~for which he was tried and acquitted ~ allegedly to dismember the American union by breaking away lands in the West. Milton Lomask begins by tracing the origins and progress of this "conspiracy," which went forward after Burr's term as Vice President ended in March 1805. A key figure in these plans was the double~dealing Gen. James Wilkinson, secretly in the pay of Spain as "Agent No. 13," whom Jeffer son trusted and who testified against Burr at his trial. Lomask highlights the legal battles at Richmond, Virginia, where Burr was charged with treason and misdemeanor. Startling new material is brought to light.
