Ralph Gibson (b. 1946) is an American photographer best known for his surreal and dreamlike images. Deja-Vu is Gibson's second book in a series known as the "Black Trilogy". It consists of approxrimately 50 black and white plates with no text. Gibson, one of the leading figures in modern photography, was influenced as a young man by Dorthea Lange and Robert Frank, both of whom he assisted in the 1960s. Gibson developed a personal aesthetic, based on stark contrasts, graphic precision, and suggestive mystery, through his encounters with European film, literature, and music.
