Paperback. Condición: Good. 640 pages. Cover wornIn a wide-ranging, provocative anatomy o f modern society and its origins, novelist and historian John Ral ston Saul explores the reason for our deepening sense of crisis a nd confusion. Throughout the Western world we talk endlessly of i ndividual freedom, yet Saul shows that there has never before bee n such pressure for conformity. Our business leaders describe the mselves as capitalists, yet most are corporate employees and fina ncial speculators. We are obsessed with competition, yet the sing le largest item of international trade is a subsidized market in armaments. We call our governments democracies, yet few of us par ticipate in politics. We complain about invasive government, y et our legal, educational, financial, social, cultural and legisl ative systems are breaking down. While most observers view these problems separately, Saul demonstrates that they are largely mani festations of our blind faith in the value of reason. Over the la st 400 years, our rational elites have gradually instituted ref orms in every phase of social life. But Saul shows that they have also been responsible for most of the difficulties and violence of the same period. This paradox arises from a simple truth which our elites deny: far from being a moral force, reason is no more than an administrative method. Their denial has helped to turn t he modern West into a vast, incomprehensible, directionless machi ne, run by process-minded experts - Voltaire's bastards - whose cult of scientific management is bereft of both sense and morali ty. Whether in politics, art, business, the military, entertainme nt, science, finance, academia or journalism, these experts share the same outlook and methods. The result, Saulmaintains, is a ci vilization of immense technological power whose peoples increasin gly dwell in a world of illusion. Already known to millions of re aders as the author of novels which portray the overwhelming effe cts of this power on the modern individual by weaving together in terna Reviews Saul locates the source of many of the contempora ry world's problems in a perversion of reason. He argues that whi le Voltaire had hoped to use reason as a tool to overthrow outmod ed and harsh customs, his successors instead employed reason as a n instrument of social control. The will of the people was unimpo rtant to such acolytes of reason as Napoleon, who argued that uni nformed popular opinion must be regimented through the supposed d ictates of reason. The result of these misguided efforts at ratio nal planning have been the horrors of modern warfare and the depr edations of industrialism. Saul attributes such varied phenomena as the arms race, the ``star system,'' and the rise of bureaucrac y to hyperrationalism. Saul, a popular novelist ( The Paradise Ea ter , LJ 11/1/88), has a vivid style that makes his book enjoyabl e reading, but a clear sense of what he means by reason never eme rges. Is it anything more than a catchphrase for whatever the aut hor dislikes?-- David Gordon, Bowling Green State Univ., Ohio Kn own for his novels of international intrigue, Saul in his first w ork of nonfiction delivers a passionate jeremiad on the follies o f our age. Reason, he argues, has run amok; instead of the enligh tened utopia envisaged by Voltaire, the modern West is a soulless machine run by technocratic elites that promise efficiency but c reate disasters. The author targets the insane waste of our ``per manent war economy,'' the perils of nuclear power, the co-optatio n of democracy by vested interests, the news media's focus on fal se events and manufactured celebrities, the ``personality politic s'' of presidential campaigns. He critiques the Harvard Business School's management teachings, profiles such figures as Thomas Je fferson, Robert McNamara and Charles de Gaulle, flunks our colleg es for failure to reward creativity and imagination. He blames no velists from James Joyce onward for ``renderi.
