Libro
Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 8vo (23.5 cm), xiv, 386 pp. Publisher's cloth backed boards and dust jacket (dj slightly frayed at extremities, front hinge somewhat cracked). In the first century CE, Jews living abroad vastly outnumbered those in Palestine, inhabiting regions spanning the Greek mainland, Aegean islands, Asia Minor, the Tigris-Euphrates valley, Egypt, and Italy. Examining hubs like Alexandria, Greek cities in Asia Minor, and Rome, Gruen scrutinizes the lives of diaspora Jews, elucidating their challenges, institutional frameworks, and adaptive strategies. Amidst sporadic harassment, this minority demonstrated resilience, with intellectuals deeply enmeshed in Greco-Roman culture yet adept at reshaping it for their own ends. Displaying both a reverence for their homeland and a dedication to local communities and Gentile governance, they navigated their identity with confidence, contributing to a vibrant cultural tapestry that defied conventional assimilation narratives, as Gruen's incisive analysis of historical and literary records reveals, challenging prevailing notions of Jewish engagement with the dominant Classical civilization.

Half cloth with dustjacket. Condición: Gut. IX, 386 p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Schutzumschlag berieben, leichte Randläsuren, Kopfschnitt verschmutzt, Bleistiftanmerkung auf Vorsatz, sonst guter Zustand / dust jacket rubbed, light edgewear, top edge soiled, pencil annotation on endpaper, otherwise good condition. - WHAT WAS LIFE LIKE FOR JEWS settled throughout the Mediterranean world of Classical antiquity and what place did Jewish communities have in the diverse civilization dominated by Greeks and Romans? In a probing account of the Jewish diaspora in the four centuries from Alexander the Great s conquest of the Near East to the Roman destruction of the Jewish Temple in 70 C.E., Erich Gruen reaches often surprising conclusions. By the first century of our era, Jews living abroad far outnumbered those living in Palestine and had done so for generations. Substantial Jewish communities were found throughout the Greek mainland and Aegean islands, Asia Minor, the Tigris-Euphrates valley, Egypt, and Italy. Focusing especially on Alexandria, Greek cities in Asia Minor, and Rome, Gruen explores the lives of these Jews: the obstacles they encountered, the institutions they established, and their strategies for adjustment. He also delves into Jewish writing in this period, teasing out how Jews in the diaspora saw themselves. There emerges a picture of a Jewish minority that was at home in Greco-Roman cities: subject to only sporadic harassment; its intellectuals immersed in Greco-Roman culture while refashioning it for their own purposes; exhibiting little sign of insecurity in an alien society; and demonstrating both a respect for the Holy Land and a commitment to the local community and gentile government. Gruen s innovative analysis of the historical and literary record alters our understanding of the way this vibrant minority culture engaged with the dominant Classical civilization. / CONTENTS Introduction 1 PART I JEWISH LIFE IN THE DIASPORA 1 The Jews in Rome 2 The Jews in Alexandria 3 Jews in the Province of Asia 4 Civic and Sacral Institutions in the Diaspora PART II JEWISH CONSTRUCTS OF DIASPORA LIFE 5 Diaspora Humor I: Historical Fiction 6 Diaspora Humor II: Biblical Recreations 7 Jewish Constructs of Greeks and Hellenism 8 Diaspora and Homeland Abbreviations Notes Bibliography Index.
