Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. Jacket painting by Roger Hane Ilustrador. Copyright page states "Second Printing / SBN 671-21399-7". Note the ABE computer will not accept this nine-digit SBN as a valid ISBN until we add a preliminary zero, not actually found in book. Fully bound in chocolate brown cloth. We find NO book-club deboss to rear board, though jacket front flap is clipped to bottom corner. Jacket has also suffered some rumpling and small closed tears to top of spine. Third book in the series, following "The Teachings of Don Juan" and "A Separate Reality." Simon & Schuster published (in fact, continues to publish) Castaneda's works as non-fiction, after the author received a Ph.D. from the UCLA Anthropology Department based on his writings. However, it was later discovered that no field notes from his supposed travels and interviews could be found -- he had merely submitted the manuscript of his first book as his thesis. Some have surmised the faculty there took no exception to this irregularity, since Castaneda's efforts reinforced their own viewpoint, that there is no objective reality, only a "perceived" reality. The book -- initially published by the University press -- also found a quick and lucrative following among the late-sixties California youth counterculture. It's even more curious that Castaneda's works are devoid of Yaqui vocabulary or terms for any of his experiences, while Dr. Clement Meighan has pointed out that the books do not seem to accurately describe Yaqui culture as known to anyone else, with its emphasis on Catholic upbringing. Furthermore, unlike the book's central figure, "don Juan," the Yaqui are not known to use peyote -- that would be the Huichol, further South in the Sierra Madre. "During nine years of collecting plants and hunting animals with don Juan, Carlos learns not one Indian name for any plant or animal," noted Richard De Mille. In 1973, Time correspondent Sandra Burton found that Castaneda had lied about his military service, his father's occupation, his age and his nation of birth (Peru, not Brazil). De Mille's 1980 compilation, "The Don Juan Papers," includes a 47-page glossary of quotations from don Juan attributed to their actual sources, ranging from Wittgenstein and C.S. Lewis to papers in obscure anthropology journals. "Carlos's adventures originated not in the Sonoran desert but in the library at UCLA," De Mille -- son of the famous Hollywood director -- concluded. Professor William W. Kelly, chairman of Yale's anthropology department, told Robert Marshall of Salon in 2007: "I doubt you'll find an anthropologist of my generation who regards Castaneda as anything but a clever con man. It was a hoax, and surely don Juan never existed as anything like the figure of his books. Perhaps to many it is an amusing footnote to the gullibility of naive scholars, although to me it remains a disturbing and unforgivable breach of ethics." Castaneda later founded what amounted to a cult, and some of the women who fell under his influence did not fare well. 315 pp. Reduced from $17.
