Hard Back. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. First Edition. 235 Pages. Blue Cloth. Dust Jacket price $24.95 is unclipped. Illustrated throughout with maps, drawings, and plates many of which are in color. In the nineteenth century, the Islamic world evoked in the imagination of artists, writers and travellers throughout Europe, a land rich in mystery and exoticism. Trade, politics and a fascination with strange and distant places had already established the Near East and North Africa in the Western mind before 1800. But the Napoleonic campaigns, the publication of Vivant Denon's superbly illustrated studies of Egypt, the accounts of Sir Richard Burton's secret visit to the forbidden city of Mecca and his search for the White Nile opened up this world to a wider audience, and during the 19th and early 20th centuries the Near East became a source of fresh inspiration for artists from America, Germany, Italy, Russia, and especially France and England. This catalogue of the first major exhibition of Orientalist art in London, held at the Royal Academy in 1984 and then at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, draws together over 100 paintings by such illustrious artists as Delacroix, Renoir, Holman Hunt and Matisse, and provides a fascinating insight into a world they found initially alien, but ultimately captivating. Every painting is illustrated, and together they provide a dazzling visual record of the imaginative shift from early romantic evocations of harems and colorful Arab ceremonies, through the almost photographic documentations of the mid 19th century, to the exploratory innovations that prepared the way for major developments in 20th century art. The Orient posed a number of moral and artistic dilemmas for Western artists: they were fascinated by the sparkling light and the unfamiliar settings rich in artistic motives, struck by the quietism and aesthetic manifestations of the Muslim religion, and shocked by the apparent lack of civilisation. This divergence between the beguiling myth of the East and the perceptions and experiences of the artists who travelled there is explored in the authoritative introductory essays, which place the Orientalist movement in its historical and cultural context. The catalogue is supplemented by a comprehensive bibliography, glossary and chronology. Contents: Western Art and its Encounter with the Islamic World, The Orient and the West from Bonaparte to T.E. Lawrence, Innocentes Abroad 19th Century Artists and Travellers in North Africa and the Near East, The Question of Faith Orientalism Christianity and Islam, and The Catalogue. Laid in is an 11" X 17" nine-page brochure published on the occasion of the exhibition by the National Gallery of Art July 1 - October 28, 1984 at Washington in Near Fine condition.
