LIEVI SEGNI DEL TEMPO ALLA SOVRACCOPERTA. This collection of critical extracts on the poetry of John Wilmot, second Earl of Rochester, ranges from the earliest contemporary Comments to the beginning of the twentieth century. The critics represented include Dryden, Defoe, Pope, Voltaire, Dr. Johnson, Hazlitt, Tennyson and Edmund Gosse. The extracts show how appreciation of Rochester's status as a poet has been very slow to develop largely because interest in his poetry had to take second place to interest in his notorious career first as a rake and free-thinker and then as a Christian convert. In the later eighteenth century and in the nineteenth century his career was held up as a warning for would-be debauchees and tracts recounting his many misdeeds are common. Many of his contemporaries and some early eighteenth-century critics, however, thought of him first as a major poet, and this serious view of his poetry, while it never entirely died out, begins to re-assert itself in the middle of the nineteenth century, until today Rochester enjoys a reputation as a verse satirist second only to Dryden in the period. David Farley-Hills is Lecturer in English, The Queen's University of Belfast.
