Libro
Condición: Gut. 355 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Small abrasions on the dustjacket. Otherwise good and clean. - Schutzumschlag leicht berieben. Sonst gut und sauber. - This is the first book in any language which both describes the prominent women in Roman history as individuals and also gives an account of the general features of the public and private, especially the family, life of Roman women of all classes. The book covers the period of just over a thousand years from the foundation of Rome to the death of Constantine, starting with the She-wolf and ending with Helena s visit to Jerusalem and the building of Santa Costanza at Rome. It covers the virtuous women of early legend, the emancipation of the female sex in the late Republic and the notorious and notable women of the Empire. In the second part of the book the Roman marriage ceremony is described in detail, the features of married life whether happy or unhappy are analysed, and woman s daily life is described, from her coiffure and make-up at one extreme to her public appearances at the theatre and games at the other. The fascination of the book derives largely from the fascination of the sources : the charm and interest of some poets (Catullus, Propertius and, in particular, Ovid s Art of Love) and the venom and satire of others (Martial and Juvenal); the graphic prose of Tacitus; the vivid account of rich vulgarity in Petronius Satyricon-, the shocked protests of the moralists and of Tertullian; the striking portraiture of Roman coinage; and the chance revelations in surviving inscriptions, particularly epitaphs, which constitute the only record of the ordinary woman who - in contrast to the flamboyant characters described by the writers - represented in Rome and the Empire the vast majority of her sex.
