Cloth. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. First Edition. Sheridan. The Track of a Comet. Foxing to end inside covers and edge. This book is primarily a rounded, colourful portrait of Richard Brinsley Sheridan, his triumphs and failures, his ferocious duels and sudden romances, and his rise to oratorical fame in the arena of politics. But it is also something more: a wide canvas - sometimes frightening, sometimes amusing - depicting the extraordinarily turbulent and violent theatrical world of London and Dublin in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, when an irate audience could destroy a theatre. Sheridan disliked and even despised the theatre, although it was here that his true talents lay, in the writing and producing of brilliant plays which sparkle as brightly today as when they first appeared. It has been calculated that he devoted five short years of his life's efforts to the theatre, and over thrity years to politics, where his heart and all his real ambitions lay. Yet he lived in an era when to succeed in politics a man needed family influence or wealth - and preferably both. Sheridan had neither. In this book the author explains why he relegated to second place that field of activity where his wit and satrical mind could have assured him an even greater measure of immortality, and even more of that money which he always needed and always spent so lavishly. Sheridan, his family and his whole world are vividly brought to life; and while his actions can sometimes be condemned, at other times it is clear that he was a prisoner of his heredity, his upbrining and his family's past. Illustrated. 383 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
