Unbeknown to Partridge, the relationship broadened to become a quatre when Brenan came to visit an fell in love with Carrington and began an affair. This became a cinq when Frances Meynell met Partridge and fell in love. Starchey died of stomach cancer and Carrington shot herself in despair, Partridge and Meynell married. Peter Levy of The Times says; Mrs Partridge is the last survivor of the inner core of the Bloomsbury Group.
