Towards the end of the 18th century, England was witness to a fascinating phenomenon; the revival of the mediaeval code of chivalry. Until well into the 20th century, the metaphors of Camelot and the mediaeval knight's concept of honour, bravery, service and self-sacrifice took on new meaning and shaped the character of English society. The adaptation of these ideals as an appropriate mode of behaviour the contemporary gentleman was reflected not only in the art and culture of the period, but in its intellectual and political life as well. In this readable and often witty volume, Mark Girouard traces the impact of the revival of chivalry in all its various aspects including politics, sport, literature, arts, love and war. -- in the concluding chapters, he poignantly shows how the very concepts of glory and honour that made war acceptable, and even desirable, dissolved in the trenches of World War I. Rubbing of the book edges with light age toning of the text block edges. A couple of marks to the front text edge. Rubbing of the dustwrapper edges and panels with fading to the back strip. Original Black Hardcover. Condición: Very Good Plus. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First Edition. 2000. x, 310pp. "How did German intellectuals react to unification and how have they conceived the country's national identity and its new international position? This important book not only examines changing notions of nationhood and their complicated relationship to the Nazi past but also charts the wider history of the development of German political thought since World War II -- while critically reflecting on some of the continuing blind spots among German writers and thinkers.Jan-Werner Muller explains why many intellectuals reacted so defensively to unification and why unification plunged the Left in particular into a major crisis that is yet to be overcome. He analyzes the responses of Gunter Grass, Jurgen Habermas, and others of the so-called skeptical generation, who broke with the tradition of the illiberal interwar intellectuals and reinvented themselves as a "democratic elite" who sought to transform political culture after the war -- and tried to do so again after 1989. He discusses the German idea of "constitutional patriotism" as well as the antinationalism of the "generation of 1968", and provides the first full-scale analysis of Germany's "New Right". Written clearly and elegantly, the book assesses the acrimonious debates about the future of the nation-state and public memory in Germany and offers more general reflections on the role intellectuals can play in post-totalitarian societies." Unclipped dust jacket in very good condition, some signs of shelfware to spine and edges. Book in excellent condition with no inscriptions.

Black Hardback. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First Edition. 2011. xxv, 721pp. B&W plates, maps. Bibliography and index. Yale English Monarchs series. "Edward III (1312?1377) was the most successful European ruler of his age. Reigning for over fifty years, he achieved spectacular military triumphs and overcame grave threats to his authority, from parliamentary revolt to the Black Death. Revered by his subjects as a chivalric dynamo, he initiated the Hundred Years' War and gloriously led his men into battle against the Scots and the French. In this illuminating biography, W. Mark Ormrod takes a deeper look at Edward to reveal the man beneath the military muscle. What emerges is Edward's clear sense of his duty to rebuild the prestige of the Crown, and through military gains and shifting diplomacy, to secure a legacy for posterity. New details of the splendor of Edward's court, lavish national celebrations, and innovative use of imagery establish the king's instinctive understanding of the bond between ruler and people. With fresh emphasis on how Edward's rule was affected by his family relationships?including his roles as traumatized son, loving husband, and dutiful father?Ormrod gives a valuable new dimension to our understanding of this remarkable warrior king." UNCLIPPED dust jacket in very good condition. Minor stain to bottom edge of the book. No marking, underlining, or inscriptions. A very good copy. Founded the Inchbald School of Interior Design in 1960, extending this to a Faculty in Garden Design in 1972. Interior design was flourishing in America as a respected adjunct to architecture. When Bill Pahlmann, one of the most talented and successful exponents of the US interior design industry visited London with a number of fellow decorators in about 1958 he expressed horror that there was neither a training centre or profession body. Following an impassioned lecture from Bill, I resolved to fill the gaps and started Inchbald in 1960. In 1962 I invited the senior exponents of interior design to come together, including David Hicks, (trained as a painter) John Siddeley (once an actor) and Jon Bannenberg (once a child prodigy concert pianist), to discuss the possibility of forming a professional association. The fourth member of this group was, of course, Michael Inchbald, my husband and an architect. However they failed to come to any constructive conclusions so the idea lay dormant for a year or two. It was subsequently revived by a businessman, Godfrey Bonsack, who ensured the Association rose like a phoenix from the muddle, and in due course became the respected British Institute of Interior Designers. The foundation in 1960 of the Inchbald set the pace for the structured education and training of Interior Designers and Decorators and indeed gave rise to further successful educational centres.
