Cloth, 8vo, 24 cm, 256 pp, [10] leaves of plates, ills. From the blurb - "Few publishers have made such an impact on the twentieth-century literary scene as Victor Gollancz, who fifty years ago started his own firm. Within a very little time it had revolutionized publishing methods in this country, flooding the bookshops with the black, yellow and magenta jackets which were one of its most striking hallmarks, and the newspapers with the bold advertisements that made the name of Gollancz famous within every household where books were read. The story of those fifty years is a varied, very human one, quite unlike the pious and arid sagas of so many publishing houses. To a far greater extent than would normally be the case it is as much the tale of a man as of the firm he created, since for thirty-eight of its fifty years 'V.G.', to all intents and purposes, was the firm. The list of authors whom it has at one time or another published includes some of the most distinguished names of our day: Daphne du Maurier, A. J. Cronin, George Orwell, Kafka, I. Compton-Burnett, Elizabeth Bowen, Colette, Joyce Cary, Dorothy L. Sayers, Margaret Mead, Krish- namurti, Ernest Newman, Léonard Woolf Stravinsky, H. G. Wells, Arthur Koestler - to mention only a few at random. Then there is the Left Book Club, which had such a vast influence on the politicai thinking of a whole generation and even, in the view of many informed people, helped to form history. Finally there is the continuing story in the eleven years since Victor Gollancz died, with the firm which he created inevitably changing but, still independent (as few medium- sized houses now are), vigorously continuing on its way." An ex-library copy with small tapemarks to the pastedown endpapers and abrasion to a small area of the front free endpaper, stamp on verso of the title-page, otherwise Good in dustwrapper.

Libro
Cloth, 8vo, 22 cm, 286 pp, [6] leaves of plates. "Here is a new approach to Greece and its myths. The great stories are here, but this is no mere retelling of tales of gods and heroes. In this widely ranging book each myth is related to the place most closely associated with it, and to the history which may be reflected in the myth, and to today's world of archaeological exploration which is helping to uncover such relationships. As the author says, 'almost every incident in Greek myth is given a place, almost every figure belongs somewhere, their movements chronicled with geographic preciseness, in many cases not just to a few miles but even a few feet. Demeter sat down on this stone beside this well, when she came to Elevsis. Zeus was born not just in a cave in Crete, but in this cave, and in fact right here, in this corner . We can go and look at these places.' And it is part of this book's concern to do precisely that. Thus, Athena is linked to the chapter on Athens; Apollo to Delphi and Delos; Agamemnon to Aulis, Mycenae and Argos; Oedipus to Thebes; Heracles to the Peloponnese; Poseidon to Sounion; Pan to Arcadia; Aphrodite to Kythira; Hera to Samos, and so on. There is a continual interplay between present and past, and between history and prehistory. Mr Senior does not suggest that there is a direct causal connection between myth and history: indeed, he stresses the diversity of myths, in form and function. But he draws revealing parallels: eg, seeing the contest between Athena arid Poseidon for possession of Athens as perhaps symbolising the choice Attica had to make between a land-based culture and a sea-going one, and finding in the story of Zeus's mating with Europa on Crete a possible reference to the European colonisation of Crete. . The result is a most illuminating and informative book, the ideal introduction to Greece for the visitor or the armchair traveller."-from the blurb. Very Good in Very Good dustwrapper.
