Hard cover dust wrapper, xiii/372pp, b&w illustrations. Dw a bit worn with some small tears at edges. A good copy. John Mercer Brooke joined the United States Navy in 1841, and was both a witness and contributor to the evolution occurring in navies in the 19th century - steam supplanting sail, iron replaced wood, and ordnance being vastly improved. While in the navy he distinguished himself as a naval scientist and designer. He invented an effective deep-sea sounding lead which eventually made possible the laying of the Atlantic cable. He led major explorations of the North Pacific Ocean and the coast of Japan, and enjoyed the distinction of escorting the first Japanese embassy across the Pacific to the United States. In 1861 he resigned his commission, and during the Civil War designed improved ordnance and armoured warships for the Confederacy and rose to the position of chief of ordnance and hydrography. When the war ended he settled in Lexington and taught for 35 years at the Virginia Military Institute.
