Octavo, paperbound (blue, full-color illus. wrappers), xii + 340 pp. Very Good, with rubbing to covers. From Preface: The titles described in the bibliography lend a special meaning to the phrase, "integrity of the collection," since they represent the scholarly focus and personal dedication of an individual scholar, William J. Bryant of South Woodstock, Vermont and Tangerine, Florida. After a period at what was then known as the Central Florida Museum, the collection was moved to the University of Central Florida library in 1968. It includes metal and fabric crafts, sound recordings, paintings, sculptures, and maps, as well as the printed materials (principally monographs) described in the following pages, with publication dates ranging from 1610 to the present. The collection includes a few single issues of journals, but does not include ongoing subscriptions to periodicals. The arrangement is based on Bryan't view that researchers would most likely approach the collection for information on an issue or topic rather than in search for a particular work. Therefore, the subject index (edged in grey) appears as the first part of the bibliography. Under a subject heading, each entry includes author, title, and date of publication. This topical section is followed by an extensive listing of complete entries arranged in alphabetical order by author, or title in the absence of an author. The bibliographic information was downloaded from cataloging records in the OCLC database (an international library network) and further downloaded through the Library's automated catalog. REcords were then processed using Pro-Cite and WordPerfect software and edited by Sharon Hood of the Library staff. Individual entries reflect cataloging conventions in force when the items were added to the collection. In certain instances, older protocols dictated entry under place, and when necessary, under a concept referred to as "corporate author." For example, a museum or other institution could be considered the "author " of a volume which would then appear in the catalog under the institution's city of residence. Spelling and punctuaation are faithful to title page vernaculars, resulting in variant forms of some geographic names. This gathering of works on the West Indies is not an isolated example. Caribbean, West Indies, Books about Books, Bibliography, Latin America. TAS.

Octavo, green cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, ix, 197 pp. Fine in a Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: Tampa's story stretches back 175 years to a remote military outpost carved from Florida's untamed swamps and jungles. Early residents survived intense heat, humidity, tropical diseases, hurricanes, and even Indian attacks to establish Fort Brooke, and later to develop the village they called Tampa. As historian Canter Brown, Jr. observes in his introduction, "Its subsequent history involved fascinating tales of remarkable people engaged in significant events that continue to resonate in our lives today." Tampa Before the Civil War provides the best available account of the early years of one of Florida's most important cities. And while it communicates the dates and facts, including the results of the latest historical research, it does much more than that. This book captures the drama, adventure, and complexity of the early pioneers and soldiers. At its heart are the people who gave the settlement its character and culture: "Those people, much more so than with the populations of many Florida and southern cities, hailed from a broad range of backgrounds, origins, and ethnic roots. Diverse from its beginnings, the city grew to occupy a special place in Florida's history and in the hearts of its residents. Florida, Floridiana, Florida History, Tampa, Hillsborough County, Americana, U.S.-iana, American History. aslic.

Very tidy ex-library super octavo hardcover (VG) in d/w (VG); all our specials have minimal description to keep listing them viable. They are at least reading copies, complete and in reasonable condition, but usually secondhand; frequently, they are superior examples. Ordering more than one book may reduce your overall postage costs.
