Octavo, paperbound (slick, illustrated, red and gold wrappers), 166 pp. Fine (As New). From lower cover: Horn's moving essays afford a window on the way Native American spirituality looks as it is lived. A generous, searching writer, Horn never descends to polemic to make his nonetheless sharp points about the submersion of native or 'primal' values in ones called civilized. Horn poignantly shows how difficult but rewarding it is to live, moment by shining moment, ina primal relationship with the world. From dust jacket: The Vision of a Contemporary University: A Case Study of Expansion and Development in American Higher Education, 1950 - 1975, by Russell M. Cooper and Margaret B. Fisher. On September 26, 1960, the University of South Florida opened its doors to 2,000 students. Not a branch of an existing state university but a new and separate institution, the University is one of the first new institutions of its kind to be built in the United States in this century. In The Vision of a Contemporary University, Cooper and Fisher assess the organic and environmental forces that helped to shape the University, illuminating the nature of these forces and describing their actual workings. From this analysis of the dynamics of a single university, a general picture of the development of universities can be drawn. The authors identify some of the major movements in American higher education since mid-century and describe their impact on the University of South Florida. Born in the upheaval of the 1960s, the University reflects the changes and innovations in higher education brought on by the unrest of that decade. These changes and innovations point toward a future student population increasingly older and more fragmented, with a greater number of part-time students commuting to classes in urban centres, changing the traditional look of universities across the country. As a new institution unfettered by tradition and experience, the University of South Florida provides a case study for the modern urban university, presenting examples of these changes and innovations that can aid more fully matured universities. Drawing on the testimony of numerous faculty, administrators, and students, and relying on documentation available in the University Archives and administrative offices, the author open a window on the inner development of a university responding to pressures from its constituency, its funding sources, and other universities. The work remarks the trends and ideas and the numerous persons contributing to the development of the University of South Florida. Florida, Floridiana, USF. Small octavo, white leatherette (hardcover), lviii + 136 pp + 31 pp. Fold-out map. From Preface: This unpretending little book is designed to give the visitor to Florida such information as will make his trip more useful and more pleasant. In writing it I have had in mind the excellent European Guide-Books of Karl Baedeker, the best, to my mind, ever published. Though I have not followed his plan very closely, I have done so to the extent the character of our country seems to allow. I have borrowed from him the use of the asterik (*) to denote that the object so dsignated is especially noteworthy, or that the hotel thus disitnguished is known to me to be well-kept, either from my own observation or that of friends. Most of the localities are described from my own notes taken during an extended tour through the peninsula, but for much resepcting railroad fare, accommodations, and charges, I am indebted to a large number of tourists and correspondents who have related to me thier experience. To all these I express my warmest thanks for their assistance. Florida, Floridiana, Florida History, Southern Americana, American South, American History, United States History.

Octavo, green cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, xi, 157 pp. Fine. From Preface: by examining the public career of one man, I hope that this study will shed light on that question as it concerns Josiah Walls and black political participation during Florida's Reconstruction. Although there were other black politicians in the state during that period -- John Wallace, Henry Harmon, Charles Pearce, and Robert Meacham, for example -- none attained the stature or received the attention given Walls throughout his career. Octavo, burgundy cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, xx, 251 pp. Very Good+ in a Very Good+, mylar protected dust jacket. From dust jacket: John Ware grew up on Florida's Gulf Coast. After high school, he became a licensed pilot maneuvering large vessels in and out of the rivers, the bays, and the harbors of that coast. Warelwell knew the safety of those vessels and crews depended, in large part, on the tools of his trade -- reliable charts and accurate sailing directions and instructions accompanying them; and he grew to appreciate the knowledge and skills it took to make them. It seems natural that Ware should have become interested in the first man to accurately survey and chart the Gulf Coast -- George Gauld. Britain had been ceded all of North America east of the Mississippi River after her victory in the Seven Years War. And, just as today, the safety of her vessels in these waters made urgent the need for reliable charts and sailing directions. Gauld arrived on the Florida Gulf Coast in August of 1 64, and for sixteen years he explored and charted that same coastline that John Ware was to pilot for so many years, from as far west as Galveston Bay in Texas to the tip of Florida's peninsula. Gauld's pioneering accomplishments, however, went unnoticed, often pirated and attributed to others, and those few charts that were published appeared only after his early death. This biography, an attempt to establish Gauld's proper place in the history of North American cartography, is the result of many years of research. It includes a list of all Gauld's known work and eleven double-page, fold-out examples of his manuscripts, drafts, sketches, and charts. Captain Ware's work also is published only after his untimely death. His manuscript was completed and supervised through the press by Robert R. Rea, another eminent historian of the Gulf Coast and a professor of history at Auburn University. Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good Minus. 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP). Signed and inscribed on the half-title page ( 'for Jane and Bob-- with all best wishes, Alan'). Once listed, this will be the Only signed copy for sale on the Internet. As you can see from the photos, the gray covers are exceptionally clean and in very good shape. There is little to no wear, a tiny crease at the very tip of the front and rear top corners, having no effect at all on the actual pages. The book is square and very solidly bound with nicely tight pages throughout. There are no binding issues. The book was produced with alkaline paper so there is no toning, no aging of the pages. There is dust staining on the top and middle page edges. In the main, this is had very little impact upon the actual pages. Over the first six pages, there is little bit of foxing off the top page edge, in no instance reaching the print. Toward the end of the book, I saw a few instances where a tiny bit of the dust staining just peeked over the top edge of the page, very minor and very inconspicuous in terms of the actual pages. The pages are in excellent condition. I'm not finding any creasing of any kind. There are no markings. There are no attachments. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The dust jacket is in solid shape. There are a couple of stains on the front cover and the spine is darkened. The flaps look very good. The jacket is not priced or clipped. From the dust jacket: 'A Metaphorics Of Fiction offers a contribution to the study of narrative logic and rhetorical language. It is relevant to the current critical seen as an effort to salvage formalist concerns for the materiality of the text without lapsing into a blindly ahistorical aestheticism. Finally, Singer asks his reader to revise many long-held assumptions about the status of narrative fiction these of the human action.'. Inscribed by Author(s).

Folio, brown cloth (hardcover), gilt letters and decoration to upper cover, xiv, 255 pp. Near-Fine, with former-owner stamps, in a Near-Fine dust jacket with slight age darkening. "This book is a musical historical narrative of the Old West. These 48 annotated songs are authentic examples of the popular music of the era, handed down from one cowpoke to another as they roamed the range, sometimes changing or adding lyrics as the song was passed along. Because the songs were not often written down, the author has had to do his homework, studying transcriptions made in the saloons and around the campfires of the early 1900s, researching tune and lyrics and story. The result is much more than a songbook. It is a true-to-life history of the frontier and of the real cowboys who lived on it.In this book Jim Bob Tinsley shows the cowboys' songs to be an essential metaphor of their lives and times. He follows the image of the cowboy from the cow-keeper of colonial America, through the CivilWar, the war for Texas's independence, the banditry of the Old West. He follows the image along the trai of the cattle drive, fighting Indians and rustlers, and into the saloons and dance halls with the gunfigher and gambler, and arrives finally at the hero we know from films and television. Yet, through it all, Tinsley is always able to penetrate the image and show us the real people who lived in the Old West and who sand these songs."
