Jews endured a subordinate status politically and militarily, a minor nation amid the powers of the Hellenistic world. Erich Gruen's work, however, highlights Jewish creativity, ingenuity, and inventiveness, as the Jews engaged actively with the traditions of Hellas, adapting genres and transforming legends to articulate their own legacy in modes congenial to a Hellenistic setting. Drawing on a wide and diverse array of texts composed in Greek by Jews over an extended period of time, Gruen explores works by Jewish historians, epic poets, tragic dramatists, writers of romances and novels, exegetes, philosophers, apocalyptic visionaries, and composers of fanciful fables~not to mention pseudonymous forgers and fabricators. Rather than analyze writer after writer, text after text, discussing genres and proposing dates, Heritage and Hellenism takes up topics common to most of the Hellenistic period, examining the various texts where appropriate to illuminate the ongoing process whereby Jewish thinkers endeavored to express their people's identity in terms borrowed, manipulated, and refashioned from the Hellenic corpus. In these fictive creations, Jewish writers reinvented their own past, offering us vital insights into Jewish self~perception.

Ivan Berend looks closely at the fateful decades preceding World War II and at twelve countries whose absence from the roster of major players was enough in itself, he says, to precipitate much of the turmoil. As waves of modernization swept over Europe, the less developed countries on the periphery tried with little or no success to imitate Western capitalism and liberalism. Instead they remained, as Berend shows, rural, agrarian societies notable for the tenacious survival of feudal and aristocratic institutions. In that context of frustration and disappointment, rebellion was inevitable. Berend vividly details, with words and illustrations, the many forms ~ artistic, ideological, and political ~ that rebellion took. Leading the reader skillfully through the maze of social, cultural, economic, and political changes in Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Austria, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and the Soviet Union, he shows how every path ended in dictatorship and despotism by the start of World War II. In the final chapter Berend demonstrates that the Great Depression was largely responsible for redirecting art to the service of politics. A return to traditional forms and social realism was embraced by some artists and suffered by others, depending on whether it called attention to present ills and future perils or forcibly reflected some party line. Berend's exploration of cultural trends adds rich overtones to this history of the interwar decades of crisis, and his sweeping historical investigation sheds much~needed light on the war, ethnic cleansing, poverty, and economic chaos that continue to plague Central and Eastern Europe.
