Soft cover. Condición: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Included. Niekas Front Cover - Larry Dickison, Back Cover - Tim Kirk Ilustrador. Niekas established itself as a large and variegated magazine containing a mixture of articles, but with particular emphasis on Fantasy and J R R Tolkien. Niekas ceased publication with no 20 in 1968, only to be revived with no 21 in 1977. Contributors to Niekas included Piers Anthony, Isaac Asimov, Anthony Boucher, Algis Budrys, Avram Davidson, Philip K Dick, Raymond Z Gallun, Jack Gaughan, Harry Harrison, Sam Moskowitz, Andre Norton, Alexei Panshin, Jerry Pournelle, Donald A Wollheim and Roger Zelazny. Niekas won the Hugo for Best Fanzine in 1967 and was nomnated again in 1989. (Peter Nicholls, Rob Hansen, David Langford/Encyclopedia of SF, 3rd Edition). #39's articles include Tolkien's Military by Betty J Bruther, columns by Fred Lerner, Anne Braude, and Don D'Ammassa among others. The Tolkien Journal is a 1968 reprint of the original issue's 1 & 2 edited by Dick Plotz that first appeared in the Spring and Winter of 1965. This issue of Neikas and these reprints of the Tolkien Journal are hard to come by and not offered together anywhere else that this editor is aware of. The Niekas is a new uncirculated copy and the Tolkien Jounral is also uncirculated, but is lightly browning from age. They are both being protected in plastic acid free storage bags.

Softcover. Condición: Very Good. Seven first editions and two authorized reprints. Quartos. Various pagination. Nine individual issues (some stapled) that have been nonprofessionally taped together along the spine. Very good with touch wear to the edges, stain on rear wrap and tapes to the spines affecting mostly the first and last sheets and with some loss to the tape from age; one issue's crossword puzzle has been filled in. A collection of the first nine issue of the *Tolkien Journal*, co-founded and published by Dick Plotz, chairman of The New York Tolkien Society. The first two issues, which are reprints of the original one-sided flyer and three-page second issue, are large attempts to find, recruit and report on Tolkien fandom nationwide. By the third issue, the magazine has swell due to new members from a one-person newsletters to printed 12-page fanzine with multiple contributors per issue exploring the world of Lord of the Rings under the new banner of The Tolkien Society of America. Uncommon. *OCLC* locates 13 locations over eight records, with about half in United States, but with most records of individual issues unclear.
