Paperback. First Edition Thus (1962); First Printing, so stated. Very Good- in Wraps: shows indications of careful use: a scuffed area (perhaps insect damage) to the lower backstrip (does not affect the titles thereon); slight spine lean; light wear to the extremities; considerable rubbing to the wrapper covers; faint soiling to the white background field of the rear panel; the binding is secure (the binding is sewn rather than simply glued); the text pages have tanned somewhat, due to aging, but remain clean. Former owner's name neatly printed at the upper corner of the front endpaper. Free of any underlining, hi-lighting, marginalia or marks in the text. A solid used copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing moderate wear and minor cosmetic flaws. Clearly this is a flawed copy, but if one can overlook the pen work, remains structurally sound and tightly bound: a clean, sturdy, presentable reading copy. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. (8 x 5.5 x 0.8 inches). x, 275 pages. Language: English. Weight: 11.4 ounces. Trade Paperback. First Edition Thus (1962); First Printing, so stated.

Free of any creases to the backstrip. Free of creases to the panels. Free of creased or dog-eared pages in the text. Free of underlining, hi-lighting, notations, or marginalia. Free of any ownership names, dates, addresses, notations, inscriptions, stamps, plates, or labels. A handsome nearly-new copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing a couple of unobtrusive flaws. Close to 'As New'. This is a REMAINDER, showing a small dot and a rubber stamp at the bottom edge of the text block. NOT a Book-Club or Ex-Library. 8vo. (8.25 x 5.5 x 0.3 inches). 87 pages. Translated by Alan Myers, with the author. Language: English. Weight: 5 ounces. First Edition Thus (1989), so stated. This translation was first published in "Comparative Criticism", volume 7 in 1985. Trade Paperback. Brodsky, a brilliant poet and sensitive translator, is also a stunning dramatist. A Platonic dialogue in the form of a double anachronism--the action takes place two centuries after our era--Joseph Brodsky s only play, Marbles, is set in a prison cell that alone provides for the three unities of classic drama: those of time, place, and action. A nightmare rather than a utopia, this play proceeds according to the immanent logic of mental aggravation as its two characters, the inmates Publius and Tullius, examine the tautology of their psychological, historical, and purely physical confines. The fusion of its dour, somewhat terrifying vision with the macabre hilarity of its verbal texture allows Marbles to take its audience beyond the farthest reaches of the theatre of the absurd. Highly recommended. First Edition Thus (1989), so stated. This translation was first published in "Comparative Criticism", volume 7 in 1985.

Paperback. First Edition Thus [1997]; First Printing indicated. Very Near Fine in Wraps: shows a most minute dot at the fore-edge; first twenty pages a very faint bend near the lower front corner [not so defined as a crease, but perceptible]. Binding shows barely discernible lean, while remaining perfectly secure; text clean. Very close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder. NOT a Book-Club Edition. NOT an Ex-Library copy. 8vo. 117pp. Trade Paperback. Calvin Trillin, the celebrated New Yorker writer, offers a rich and engaging biography of his father, as well as a literate and entertaining fanfare for the common (and decent, and hard-working) man. Abe Trillin had the western Missouri accent of someone who had grown up in St. Joseph and the dreams of America of someone who had been born is Russia. In Kansas City, he was a grocer, at least until he swore off the grocery business. He was given to swearing off things coffee, tobacco, alcohol, all neckties that were not yellow in color. Presumably he had also sworn off swearing, although he was a collector of curses, such as "May you have an injury that is not covered by workman's compensation." Although he had a strong vision of the sort of person he wanted his son to be, his explicit advice about how to behave didn't go beyond an almost lackadaisical "You might as well be a mensch." Somehow, though, Abe Trillin's messages got through clearly. First Edition Thus [1997]; First Printing indicated.

White titles on a background field of red and black designs. Trade Paperback. In these fictional memoirs, Braz Cubas, a wealthy nineteenth-century Brazilian, examines (from beyond the grave) his rather undistinguished life in 160 short chapters that are filled with philosophical digressions and exuberant insights. A clear forerunner of Gabriel García Márquez and Jorge Luis Borges, Epitaph for a Small Winner, first published in 1880, is one of the wittiest self-portraits in literary history as well as one of the masterpieces of Brazilian literature. Machado De Assis(1839 1908) , was a pioneer Brazilian novelist, poet, playwright and short story writer, widely regarded as the greatest writer of Brazilian literature. Nevertheless, Assis did not achieve widespread popularity outside Brazil during his lifetime. In 1897 he founded and became the first President of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. Machado's work shaped the realism movement in Brazil. He became known for his wit and his eye-opening critiques of society. Generally considered to be Machado's greatest works are Dom Casmurro (1899) , Epitaph of a Small Winner and Philosopher or Dog? . In 1893 he published "A Missa do Galo" ("Midnight Mass") , often considered to be the greatest short story in Brazilian literature. American literary critic Harold Bloom's included Machado de Assis in his list of 100 geniuses of literature and considered him the greatest black writer in Western literature. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 223 pages First Edition Thus (1990), Fifth Printing (1998); Second Printing.
