Soft cover. Condición: Fine. 1st Edition. Wrappers. Edition limited to 300 copies. The first publication of John Randle's Whittington Press was Richard Kennedy's memoir A Boy at the Hogarth Press (1972). Kennedy delivered a fascinating insight into working with Leonard and Virginia Woolf in the 1920s. Paul Wakeman, son of Geoffrey and Frances Wakeman of the Plough Press, Kidlington, went to work for John Randle in March 1986, doing very odd jobs, one moment setting up the Randle Amstrad to print labels, the next applying himself to emergency hand-setting, the next so loading up the Whittington van with keybars that its exhaust scraped the ground. His account of a summer at the Whittington Press is charming and eccentric. When it was over he took a Diploma in Publishing at Watford College of Technology, and in 1988 moved to New Castle, Delaware, to work for Bob Fleck at Oak Knoll.

Soft cover. Condición: Fine. 1st Edition. Café-au-lait wrappers. 400 copies printed, by Smith Settle. Cover decoration by Eric Ravilious. "I can't help regretting the amount of time AJ spent on the minutiae of bibliography," writes Julian Symons, author of A.J.A. Symons: his life and speculations (1950). "He made his own elaborate defence of it (see page 86 of my biography [on which the author quotes an example of what he calls his brother's ingenious special pleading]), but it does not convince me and perhaps did not convince him. Bibliography followed as an end in itself is surely a Mecca for little minds, not those that range widely like his." George Ramsden, author of an enthralling bibliography of the poet Christopher Logue, has another end in this well-illustrated 101-item catalogue. He celebrates the life of an entrepreneurial book collector who died untimely, nine days after his 41st birthday. The books and manuscripts Ramsden offers for sale include a series of early letters from Symons to a correspondent unknown to his brother, Alan Instrell, a mass of First Edition Club publications and ephemera, and books inscribed by Symons to Max Beerbohm, Tancred Borenius, Oliver Brett and Maundy Gregory. Not in Walsdorf & Allen.

First edition, 8vo, pp. 77, [1]; 4 photographic illustrations on 2 plates; fine in original pictorial wrappers. Paul Wakeman, son of the paper scholar and proprietor of the Plough Press Geoffrey Wakeman, was recruited by John Randle at the Whittington Press in 1986 when the Oxford University Press was in the process of discarding its Monotype equipment and installing computers. With his help Randle ferried car-loads of printing machinery to Whittington. He did not know then that Paul was keeping this diary - it has only recently come to light. The interaction between John and his assistant provides a facsinating counterpoint to the various activities of the press.

Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. Nice copy in dustwrapper. [500 copies printed, some destroyed by the flooding of the River Ouse]. "All his life, Alan had every intention of writing something, a novel most probably, that would be a great work of art. Everything seemed set for this natural and marvellous fulfilment," writes David Pryce-Jones. "Among many who treated him as an obviously up-and-coming young man were Harold Nicolson and Somerset Maugham and the Sitwells . . . The range of his friends and acquaintances was huge, some like John Betjeman or Cyril Connolly with him on the path to Mount Parnassus, and others in need of a meal. He made light of being editor of the Times Literary Supplement [1948-59], a job for which he was eminently suited. The father that I got to know and admire without reserve treated me as an equal. Years were to pass before I learnt that I hadn't really known him at all." John Byrne, branché antiquarian bookseller and man of letters, makes a discreet editor of the diaries of (the diarist's son's words) "a flamboyant exhibitionist and homosexual". Notes from a dinner party, February 1938: Stephen Spender, "a dreary old thing suffused by flashes of gaiety. Cyril says how amusing he was at Christmas sitting up in bed and pretending to be his grandmother - but it is often better than that. The head of a beautiful turnip"; Cyril Connolly, "quick under the fat, disloyal, an admirable destroyer. A great taker of quiet notes. Would have been an aesthete in Jowett's time, and takes to anarchy in the same spirit. Easily wounded, unforgiving, dislikeable, delightful".

Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. 4to. Fine copy in dustwrapper. The very personal story of the foundation of Leith School of Art, in the biographies of Mark Cheverton (1952-1991) and his wife, Charlotte (née Ramsden, 1960-1991). Mark Cheverton, head of art at the Edinburgh Academy, 1982-88, and Lottie, the former pupil whom he married, set up a new school of art in 1988 in what was once the Scandinavian Lutheran church in Leith, home of the Norwegian Seamen's Mission. Three years later they both died in a car crash, but their own mission continues in the school they founded. George Ramsden's book, generously illustrated with photographs, drawings, prints and paintings, is more than a document of artistic Edinburgh in the 1980s; it is an account of two unusual individuals who collaborated to inspire. "They were the most beautiful, good and kind people that I ever met," testifies one of their alumnae. "I thought I had gone to Leith to learn to draw but instead they opened doors into something far greater, and introduced me to what love really means.".
