Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. European visions of Japan are dominated by cliches such as the cherry blossom, the temples, the samurai, the geisha, and Zen. But this has more to do with European longings and utopian ideals than with today's Japan. The photographer Andri Pol has visited the Japanese Islands over many years and he has taken pictures strictly avoiding any such soft-focus cliches. Fascinated and irritated at the same time, Pol casts a sharp eye on the reality of Japan beyond European projections of the Far East. Even though he can't completely avoid the cherry blossom and the tea rites, he encounters human beings who have learned to live between yesterday and tomorrow masters of the profane. He finds beauty within the everyday life of modern Japan. Andri Pol, born 1961 in Switzerland, works as a photographer for different international magazines and publishing houses. His works have been widely published. European visions of Japan are dominated by cliches such as the cherry blossom, the temples, the samurai, the geisha, and Zen. But this has more to do with European longings and utopian ideals than with the Japan. This title focuses on the reality of Japan beyond European projections of the Far East. "Not only is he the world's preeminent architecture photographer, Robert Polidori is also a master of urban portraiture. The Montreal-born photographer has made haunting studies of bombed-out buildings in Beirut, decaying New York tenements, Versailles rooms in dusty disarray, Brasilia's paean to spare 1950's Modernism, and, most recently, the abandoned, contaminated cities of Chernobyl and Pripyat. Taken together, they add to his ongoing project: The interpretation of the interrupted urban landscape. Combines the eye of a celebrated photographer with the distinctive voice of an artist and adventurer. Each breathtaking image, meticulously selected by the photographer from his own personal archive, is accompanied by a compelling first-person account, based on interviews conducted by Martin C. Pedersen. The world's great cities as seen through the eyes of a sharp social observer and a great photographer" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Robert Polidori collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed and dated in black ink-pen on the title page by the photographer: "Robert Polidori 2006". A rare signed copy. 93 color plates. One of the most brilliant photographers of our time. A fine copy. ISBN 3865210783. Signed by Author.

Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Christopher Morris's "My America" was produced over the past three years while on assignment for "Time Magazine" covering the first and now second administrations of U.S. President George W. Bush. Morris describes "My America" as his personal journey into a Republican America. "Hopefully," Morris says, "you will see what I saw and feel what I felt - a nation that has wrapped its eyes so tightly in red, white, and blue that it has gone blind. This is "My America"." "My America" is the first monograph of Morris's work. Over the past 20 years Christopher Morris has concentrated the greater part of his work on war correspondence, documenting more than 18 foreign conflicts, including the U.S. invasion of Panama, the Persian Gulf War, the drug war in Columbia, and the wars in Afghanistan, Chechnya and Yugoslavia. For the last four years he has been home, photographing the relative calm of the domestic side of George W. Bush's presidency, on assignment for "Time." Morris describes this collection of his Bush-era work as his personal journey into a Republican America. "Hopefully," Morris says, "you will see what I saw and feel what I felt—a nation that has wrapped its eyes so tightly in red, white and blue that it has gone blind. This is "My America."" Morris, a founding member of the photojournalist agency VII, based in Paris, has received numerous awards for his work, including the Robert Capa Gold Medal, several World Press Photo awards, and the Infinity Photojournalist award from the International Center of Photography. This is his first monograph. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

Christopher Morris, born in California in 1958, began his career as a documentary conflict photographer, working almost exclusively with Time Magazine, where he has been on contract since 1990. Parallel to his career as a photojournalist, Morris has recently expanded into the fashion world, working for such clients as Roberto Cavalli and magazines on the collections of Louis Vuitton, Prada and Max Mara. Morris has received many awards including the Robert Capa Gold Medal, the Olivier Rebbot Award, and the Infinity Award for photojournalism from the International Center of Photography. Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Redlands weaves together an intimate sequence of photographs and a short story by Philip Brookman, set in California, Mexico and New York City during the unsettled decades of the 1960s and 1970s. Brookman uses fiction and images from his own photographic diaries to create a first-person account of Kip, an artist who wanders back and forth between farmworkers and poets-between California and New York-seeking the meaning of his mother's death. When Kip learns that he can't trust the eyewitness accounts of his sister, he picks up a camera to find meaning in his own experience. By juxtaposing the oppositional strategies of fiction and documentary practice to find an invented narrative, Redlands questions the veracity of logical observation and embraces the poetry of the real world. Set in California, Mexico and New York City, during the 1960s and 1970s, this title uses fiction and images from the author's photographic diaries to create a first-person account of Kip, an artist who wanders back and forth between farm workers and poets between California and New York seeking the meaning of his mothers death. The studio only has a machine that makes four ID images at a time, a number that most clients cannot afford, so the photographer takes single analog pictures, punches out the head with a special device, and discards the rest. In these faceless prints, one's focus shifts to the subject's individual posture and clothing, forming a typological portrayal of a community. Martina Bacigalupo also interviewed clients of Gulu, and their stories, many deeply moving, describe the political, economic, and social conditions common to contemporary East Africa. Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. John Cohen was a founding member of the New Lost City Ramblers, one of the American folk revival's most authentic and respected musical groups. In the 1960s he made a series of photographs of the last years of Woody Guthrie's life, and early portraits of Bob Dylan on his arrival in New York, depicting two titans of American music at opposite ends of their careers. In the process, Cohen portrayed one of the great moments of American folk music history. The book contains other images from the 1960s, including the music scenes at Washington Square and on MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village, images of Jerry Garcia and the musicians in San Francisco's Family Dog, as well as the psychedelic Sky River Rock festival. In 1970, Dylan requested Cohen make another set of color photographs of him with a camera that could take photographs from a block away. He was portrayed walking unrecognized on the streets of the city and at a farm in upstate New York. The photographs were used in Dylan's album Self Portrait. Yet as much as Paulsen's images explore her existence now children playing Scrabble, freshly cut roses, gambolling dogs they also concern memory and family history. Paulsen's colour is hushed and her subjects sometimes subtly blurred, creating effects that hark back to Paulsen's training as a painter. And just like much still-life painting, "Sarah Rhymes with Clara" is a revelation of the poetic in the seemingly banal. As William Meyers wrote of one of Paulsen's images in the "Wall Street Journal", the picture is so casual, so free of gimmicks, it seems to have taken itself, which is precisely the hardest of artistic accomplishments. Describes Susan Paulsen's daily life: family, friends, her surroundings and the nude, in locations including Westchester, Block Island and Mabou. Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Portrait Photographs by Jim Dine. Jim Dine may be best known for his prints, paintings and sculptural works—and for being one of the founders of Pop art—but he has also been making photographs since 1996. Most of the photographs are set up in the studio. Often featuring multiple exposures, Gothic imagery and automatic-writing-like text, they tend to convey a tinge of Surrealism. Dine has said about his practice, "I don't use Photoshop with all the things you can do. I photograph and then I preview. I preview all day until I get it right, but I get it right by changing the objects." For this volume, which will be eye-opening even to Dine's most familiar fans, the artist has selected a group of self-portraits, portraits he has taken of friends and relatives—both alive and dead—and portraits of Pinochio, the fictional character he has been reimagining for the last several years. Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. In 1960, after an intense year photographing the notorious Brooklyn street gang The Jokers, Bruce Davidson decided to remove himself from the tension and depression of that work. He received an assignment to photograph Marilyn Monroe during the making of John Houston's The Misfits in the Nevada desert, and then travelled to London on commission for Queen magazine. Published by Jocelyn Stevens, Queen was devoted to British lifestyle and Davidson was charged, with no specific agenda, to spend a couple of months touring England and Scotland to create a visual portrait of the two countries. England / Scotland 1960 offers a poetic insight into the heart of English and Scottish cultures. Reflecting a postwar era in which the revolutions of the 1960s had not quite yet entered the mainstream, Davidson's photographs reveal societies driven by difference--the extremes of city and country life, of the landed gentry and the common people. Published for the first time in its entirety in 2005, this new edition has a larger ideal format chosen by Davidson initially for his book Black & White (2012), and now the standard size for his future publications with Steidl. Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. The American photographer Leonard Freed travelled to Germany for the first time in 1954. Curious and yet from a safe distance, he observed the people in their social surroundings, at work, at street festivals, in public parks, in the streets and against the industrial backdrop of the Ruhr Valley. The Germany he saw was deeply cursed with the effects of war and the NS regime - despite the country's reconstruction, industrial development and economic success. Freed published his extensive report Made in Germany for the first time with Grossman Publishers in New York in 1970. The present reprint accompanies the same-named exhibition at Museum Folkwang in Essen and comes with a booklet providing extra information about Freed's approach and his times. The booklet also contains hitherto unpublished images, documents, and writing by Freed, spanning his fifty years of photographing Germany. The author travelled to Germany in 1954. Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Paola De Pietri first learnt of World War I at school and from family members who recounted historical facts through personal experiences - experiences that are in danger of being forgotten. In To Face De Pietri preserves these memories in a series of photographs of the alps between Italy and Austria, a landscape that still bears the scars of trench warfare from nearly a century ago. De Pietri's subtle, unassuming images show a landscape once damaged by man is now being reclaimed by nature. Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. "James Karales (1930-2002) was big-time in the best time but is not as well known as he should be," argues photographic historian Vicki Goldberg. This book will change that. Early in his career, Karales began a photo-essay documenting Rendville, Ohio, an important stop on the Underground Railroad during the Civil War and one of the few racially integrated communities in America in the late 1950s. These pictures demonstrate his striking ability to capture the essential qualities of a community, are reminiscent of images made for the Farm Security Administration in the 1930s, and reflect Karales' state of mind as he grappled with the racial issues that were to preoccupy him and America for many years to come. Karales worked for Look from 1960 until it ceased publication in 1971. Among many important assignments for the magazine, Karales documented Martin Luther King and the 50 mile, five-day Selma (Alabama) march in 1965. 15 minutes before the end of the march, the sky darkened and Karales' wide-angle shot of the protesters silhouetted against the horizon has since become an emblem of the march and has insured the photographer's place in this tumultuous period of American history. Through this new publication we discover that Karales' stature as a photojournalist and social documentary photographer par excellence is based on much more than one iconic image from Selma. Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. The catalogue for the retrospective show. Timm Rautert has been an experimental photographer, a photojournalist, a portraitist and, since 1993, a professor. Following his 1974 book, "Deutsche in Uniform, " recently reissued, he has continued to photograph his countrymen, devoting much of his time to extensive series, including one from the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in 2000. "When We Don't See You You Don't See Us Either" refers in title to the portraitist's vocation of seeing and being seen, and offers Rautert's career for the same defining scrutiny, a portrait of its own. This definitive portfolio spans more than 35 years of distinguished work, much of which has never before been published for English-language audiences. Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. This definitive monograph brings together Gundlach's fashion work for the first time and establishes him as a leading light of the industry. One of the most distinguished German fashion photographers of the post-war era, Gundlach wrote fashion history over a period of forty years. His work presents not only the evolution of clothing, but also the poses, gestures, props and locations, which have defined the changing idea of beauty over decades. Alongside this work, Gundlach also created emphatic portraits, reportages and travel photography. Gundlach has always considered himself a photographer on assignment, and his work for high-circulation magazines shaped the public's perception of fashion. Yet his images also captured the spirit of their time, embodying the optimism of the meagre days after the war, through op and pop art to post-modernism. The Photographic Work is the long-awaited English edition of the original German book, which won a Silver Deutscher Fotobuchpreis in 2009. F.C. Gundlach was born in Heinebach, Germany in 1926, and his work portraits fashion from 1950 to 1990, from haute couture to pret-a-porter, from Berlin's tailoring to today's unisex fashion. Working for magazines such as Film und Frau (1952-1966) and Brigitte (1963-1986), Gundlach was formative in determining the public perception of fashion at this time. His is the oeuvre of a great photographer who defied in Theodor W. Adorno's words the "clotted discrepancy between the sterile and the useful" of visual imagery. The photography of F.C. Gundlach defines the look of postwar fashion in Germany. Using strong contrast effects, he was able to create a style that unified model, clothing and backdrop into a single composite, merging, for example, in one famous series, the bold stripes of an Op Art jacket with the pyramids at Giza beyond, or clustering a model in boa feathers within a phalanx of police officers. During the four decades following the end of the Second World War, Gundlach worked for high-circulation magazines in Germany such as "Film und Frau," "Constanze," "Annabelle," "Stern" and "Quick," In 1963 he signed an exclusive contract with the magazine "Brigitte," and from this point on he began to embody the image of 60s couture photography in Germany, with his frequent borrowings from Op and Pop Art idioms. Born in 1926, Gundlach was also the founder of the photographic supplies company PPS and the PPS Galerie, one of the first photo galleries in Germany, and has done much influential work as a lecturer and exhibition curator. This monograph, the first in English to offer an extensive consideration of Gundlach's oeuvre, and co-designed by Gundlach himself, establishes his significance as a trailblazer in the industry. Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. American street photographer Leon Levinstein is much admired within the photographic community, but little known outside of it. Solo exhibitions at the National Gallery of Canada in 1995 and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2010 brought him to the attention of many, but his dynamic and original work is yet to achieve the recognition it deserves. Levinstein's fearless and unsentimental black-and-white images, whether shot in New York City, Coney Island, Haiti, Mexico or India, possess, in Metropolitan Museum of Arts Curator of Photographs, Jeff Rosenheim's words, "graphic virtuosity-seen in raw, expressive gestures and seemingly monumental bodies-balanced by an unusual compassion for his off-beat subjects." In 1975, at the age of 65, Levinstein received a grant from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. His intention, in his own words, was to photograph "as wide a spectrum of the American scene as my experience and vision will allow." This long-awaited book fulfils this ambitious goal.
