From the Dust Jacket: "THE LIFE AND TIMES OF RICHARD J. HUGHES explores the influential public service of this two-term New Jersey governor, the only person in New Jersey history to serve as both governor and chief justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court. This biography illuminates the governor's accomplishments between 1962 and 1970, including the creation of the Hackensack Meadowlands Commission, formation of the county college system, establishment of stringent antipollution laws, design of the public defender system, and the adoption of a New Jersey sales tax, as well as his pivotal role during the Newark riots. As chief justice, Hughes faced difficult issues -- school funding, low- and moderate-income housing needs, freedom of speech, and his decision in the nation's right to-die case involving Karen Ann Quinlan. With a career characterized by liberal activism, Hughes also contributed nationally and internationally, from serving in significant roles at both the 1964 and 1968 Democratic National Conventions to monitoring elections in South Vietnam. John B. Wefing's research includes interviews with prominent politicians and leaders who worked with Hughes at various points in his career. The result is a rich story of a public servant who possessed a true ability to work with members of both political parties and who played a significant role in shaping modern New Jersey." . Trade Paperback. Condición: Very Good. First Edition. 234 Pages Indexed. Inscribed by author on title page with eight inked-lines. No defects noted. No marks or stamps and interior text pages are flawless. This book examines how Latino cultural production has engaged with U.S. militarism in the post Vietnam era. Analyzing literature alongside film, memoir, and activism, the author highlights the productive interplay among social, political, and cultural movements while exploring Latino responses to U.S. intervention in Central America and the Middle East. These responses evolved over the course of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries from support for anti-imperial war, as seen in Alejandro Murguia's Southern Front, to the disavowal of all war articulated in works. With a focus on how issues of race, class, gender, and sexuality intersect and are impacted by war and militarization, this book illustrates how this country's bellicose foreign policies have played an integral part in shaping U.S. Latino culture and identity and given rise to the creation of works that recognize how militarized violence and values, such as patriarchy, hierarchy, and obedience, are both enacted in domestic spheres and propagated abroad. Signed by Author(s).

Softcover. First Edition, First Printing. pp. xviii, 164. 4to. Richly illustrated with black-and-white, and colour photographs, portraits, illustrations, facsimiles, et al. Lightest rubbing to the covers, neat ink name to the corner of the ffep, else, very good+, to, near fine. Mirroring Evil: Nazi Imagery/Recent Art features the work by thirteen internationally recognized artists who use imagery from the Nazi era to explore the nature of evil. Their works are a radical departure from previous art about the Holocaust, which centered on tragic images of victims. Instead, these artists dare to invite the viewer into the world of the perpetrators. The viewer, therefore, faces an unsettling moral dilemma: How is one to react to these menacing and indicting images, drawn from a history that can never be forgotten? The artists represented in Mirroring Evil impel us to examine what these images of Nazism might mean in our lives today. Essays in the catalogue explore themes of moral ambiguity in makers and viewers of art, institutional responsibility in exhibiting controversial artworks, and the complicated issues of representing or even imagining the perpetrators. Entries about the individual artworks discuss in greater depth the artistic, ethical, and historical complexity of the images that the artists dare to engage.
