Hardcover. Condición: Very Good+. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. First Edition. Dark Sanctuary by H.B. Gregory Ultra-rare (First Edition) Minor bumping and rubbing to corners and spine ends. Slight foxing to outer text block edge. Wear to edges and spine ends. 1.5 inch section cut out of tanned spine, 5/- price taped in. Price-clipped and in clear protective cover. No date to copyright page. Less than a dozen copies made it into circulation before the others were destroyed in a German air raid. DARK SANCTUARY is a quintessential "lost book" and very few people had heard of it until John Pelan's Midnight House came out with a short-run edition several years back. It tackles the horror scene with an unusually benign Christian flavor that is rather refreshing in this era of Old Testament wrath. The story opens with Anthony Lovell, Sr., master of the ancient abbey of Kestrel and its Iike-named island off the Cornish coast, raving in madness and fear over the ancient family curse that ''dwells in the bowels of the abbey rock.'' What has caused his madness is unclear, but it is obviously Iinked to something seen or experienced in Kestrel's ancient crypts. Lovell's son is called back from London and, soon thereafter, John Hamilton, a freelance journalist and friend to the younger Lovell, makes his way to Kestrel as well . . . BOOK.
