Hardcover. xvii, 270, xv, 273-446p., matched pair in Hakluyt's signature format: blue cloth boards gilt & blind and enclosed in their dust jackets. Top edges of both volumes are dusty and foxed, and the second was printed on paperstock not fully alkaline, giving v.2 a pervasive mild browning. Jackets are a bit edgeworn with toned spine panels; these mild signs of age are matched, along with the general design. A good to very good set: quite sound, otherwise clean, and free of deliberate markings. Second series Nos. CXXVI, CXXVII.

Hardcover. Condición: g+ to vg. First edition. Quarto. LVI, 341, [1]pp. Original gilt-, and blind-stamped blue cloth, with gold lettering on spine. Frontispiece. In 1794, Charles Bishop sailed from Bristol as master of the Ruby, a trading ship bound for north-west America. He had instructions to purchase otter furs from the Indians and then to proceed to Canton via Japan and sell the cargo. During the years 1794-1802, he rounded South America to reach the Pacific coast, then visited the Pacific islands and the coasts of Asia and Australia. In the Moluccas, he sold the Ruby and purchased the Nautilus. This narrative is Bishop's journal of his voyages and relates a minor epic of adventure, courage and turbulent fortune. The records of his letters and financial accounts show something of the ships' general organization, and of the seamen who served such expeditions. Bishop also describes the various ports and peoples he encountered; his experiences typify European contacts in the Pacific, and the reaction between trader, missionary, administrator and local inhabitant. Dr Roe's introduction gives the background to the trading voyages of the 18th century and describes Bishop's own history. Records of his life continue until 1809, ending tragically in Sydney, where he passed some years in poverty and insanity, before being returned to England. This book is complete with its 5 maps, including two folded. Very minor age-toning on spine and along edges of binding. Binding in overall good+ to very good, interior in very good condition.

Hardcover. Condición: g+ to vg. First edition. Quarto. LIV, 392pp. Original gilt-, and blind-stamped blue cloth, with gold lettering on spine. Frontispiece. In the wake of the navigators who finally opened up the Pacific came missionaries, traders and finally administrators. In the early decades of the 19th century Polynesia was a rich field for the curious and the calculating, for writers and adventurers. The pioneer European settlers in Eastern Polynesia were ministers and mechanics sent out on the crest of an Evangelical wave the merged with the currents and eddies of trade and whaling to break down the isolation of the islands and their inhabitants. Among the pioneers was Welshman John Davies (1772-1855) who spent just over 50 years of his life on Tahiti and neighbouring islands. He witnessed the rise of the Pomare dynasty, conversion to Christianity, reaction to attempts at theocratic government, and the gradual encroachment of alien commerce and European rule. His colleagues have made their contribution to the history and anthropology of Polynesia. Davies himself, teacher, linguist and careful observer, wrote his own story of the Mission, its personalities and their contact with the Polynesians, from the early phase of disillusionment through three decades of political and economic change, destruction and reconstruction. From this contact there emerged the uneasy compromise of missionary and indigenous beliefs and institutions that characterized Tahiti and its neighbours before and after the advent of French administration. Davies's manuscript History is here edited and annotated, supplemented by the writings of other missionaries and presented as a contribution to the literature of the Pacific (from the publishers). This volume is complete with all its in-text illustrations, full-page and folded maps and plates. Minor age-toning to spine and along edges of binding. Binding in overall good+, interior in very good condition.

Hardcover. Condición: vg. First edition. Quarto. LXXXII, 230pp. Original gilt-, and blind-stamped blue cloth, with gold lettering on spine. Frontispiece. In 1764 John Byron was commissioned by the Admiralty to sail to the South Atlantic to search for Pepys's Island and the Southern Continent. He was then to continue into the Pacific itself and look for a possible North-west passage. Although he rediscovered the Falkland Islands, it was after the French had done so under Bougainville, and he made no attempt to search for a North-west passage at all, but sailed straight on round the world, making no discoveries of any importance. The journal which Byron kept during his voyage has been edited and annotated by Dr Robert E. Gallagher. In his Introduction he describes earlier voyages of a similar nature and sketches the background to this voyage. He assesses Byron's achievement and considers why he disobeyed his orders. Apart from the Journal, the Admiralty's 'secret instructions' to Byron are also printed here, as well as Byron's letter to the Admiralty explaining why he was sailing straight on. There is an appendix by Dr Helen Wallis on the Patagonian giants. This volume is complete with all its full-page and folded maps and plates. Minor shelf wear. Binding and interior in overall very good condition.

Hardcover. Condición: g to vg. First edition. Quarto. IX, [1], 170pp. Original gilt-, and blind-stamped blue cloth, with gold lettering on spine. Frontispiece. 'Being about to write down the disastrous voyage of this great ship, it occurred to me how rash men are in their undertakings, chief among which, or one of the greatest is confiding their lives to four planks lashed together, and to the discretion of the furious winds.' So wrote Henrique Dias, an eye-witness of the wreck of the Sao Paulo off Sumatra and the subsequent fate of the survivors. His account is one of three narratives, here translated into English for the first time, of certain shipwrecks which befell the Portuguese in the mid-16th century. The other two describe the wrecking of two East Indiamen off the East African coast, and the misadventures of a voyage from Brazil to Lisbon. In his introduction, Professor Boxer describes the lives of the three chroniclers, and gives bibliographical details of their works. The narratives are translated from the original accounts which Bernardo Gomes de Brito included in his "História Trágico-Máritima" (Lisbon, 1735-36). The present volume, complete with all its plates and folded maps, forms a companion to Professor Boxer's earlier work "The Tragic History of the Sea, 1589-1622" (Hakluyt Society, 1959). Age-toning to spine. Binding in overall good, interior in very good condition.
