very good dust-jacket, very good red cloth. FRUGONI, CHIARA. A distant city: images of urban experience in the medieval world. Translated by William McCuaig. Princeton, N.J.: Princeton University Press, 1991, 1st printing number line ending in 1, xv, 206pp., . In a remarkable synthesis of iconography and social history, Chiara Frugoni addresses the changing concept of the city as revealed in visual and literary images throughout medieval Europe. By exploring the sentiments expressed through the image of the city, she traces how notions of civic identity became fused in the consciousness of the people and in the daily flow of their lives. An examination of cities depicted in early medieval illustrations suggests a widespread feeling of insecurity, often conveyed through networks of bare walls marking the boundary between order and chaos. Analyzing chronicles and other historical texts, Frugoni shows that the strong relationship between cities and their bishops led to a consciousness of the city as a meeting place rather than simply a place to live under protection. As the religious and protective roles of the city diminished during the high Middle Ages and early Italian Renaissance, a secular ideology emerged, finding its expression, for example, in the Lorenzetti fresco in Siena, a political manifesto offering a reassuring view of Good Government in the city. - CONTENTS: An empty circle -- Cities of memory, a dream in mosaic -- The better city : in search of the past -- The characters on stage -- The curtain in the open air : a few steps toward the truth -- Images too beautiful : reality perfected. He also gives us humour. This book should sit on the same shelf as [Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time]. We ignorant humanists need all the easy scientific instruction we can get." ~Anthony Burgess, The Observer. Frank Close, a leading physicist and talented popular science writer, reveals the true story of the cold fusion controversy~a story ignored unti lnow in spite of the glare of publicity surrounding Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons. OnMarch23, 1989, these two Utah scientists held an astonishing press conference, maintaining that they had succeeded, working in secret, in hamessing atomic fusion. What was the basis for their claims to have achieved cold fusion in a test tube in a basement laboratory, while other scientists~using magnets as big as houses and temperatures hotter than those in the center of the sun~were failing to produce as much power as they were using? Why did Fleischmann and and Pons proclaim their" discovery" at a news conference, when first announcements of scientific results are almost always made within the scientific community? Why did the full~blown media event inspired by their initial report cause governments to reorient their research programs in hopes of cornering the "new technology"? And why did some scientists recklessly abandon their traditional painstaking methods in haste to be first to prove or discredit the experiment? Acquainted at first hand with investigations of cold fusion on two continents, Close is uniquely qualified to probe the motivations behind Fleischmann's and Pons's startling assertions and to explore the intellectual and political turmoil that surrounded the cold fusion debate. This tale of scientific intrigue and misadventure includes an overview of the long~term international research effort to find a method of using atomic fusion as a practical source of almost unlimited safe energy. If Fleischmann and Pons had been right, humanity would have been well on the way to finding a solution to our planet's perilous fuel shortages and to minimizing the dreaded consequences of the Greenhouse Effect. Reminding us that cold fusion would also have provided a frighteningly easy way for even small countries to produce H~bombs, the author probes not only the U.S. side of the story but also the previously ignored impact of the cold fusion announcement in Europe and Asia.
