Hardcover. Condición: VG+. Illustrated glossy dj. Covers purple, gold lettering on spine. 215 pp : color illustrations. This visually stunning volume offers perceptive examinations of several renowned German and Austrian Expressionist artists who redefined modern self-portraiture. The self-portrait has been a vital aspect of artistic expression throughout history. Neo-Classical painters such as El Greco and Rembrandt formalized the practice, and the first half of the 20th century saw a dramatic transformation in the self-portrait's style and context, especially in the hands of the German and Austrian Expressionists. Vibrant reproductions of works by Egon Schiele, Max Beckmann, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Oskar Kokoschka, and others are accompanied by essays that explore how these artists--many of whom were classified as "degenerate" by the Nazi party--imbued their images with eloquent expressions of resistance, isolation, entrapment, and provocation. From Schiele's erotically charged and overtly physical paintings to Beckmann's emotionally fraught depictions of psychic trauma, this important examination of a powerful aspect of modern European painting brilliantly illustrates how the Expressionist self-portrait became a powerful weapon against artistic oppression. 00Exhibition: Neue Galerie, New York, USA (28.02.- 24.06.2019). Contents as follows: Preface / Ronald S. Lauder -- Foreword / Renee Price -- "I Lust to Experience Everything" : Egon Schiele and the Self-Portrait / Tobias G. Natter -- The Modern Artist : On the Self-Image and Self-Understanding of German and Austrian Painters / Olaf Peters -- A Painter in Changing Roles : Max Beckmann's Self-Portraits in Context / Uwe M. Scchneede -- Self-Depiction in the Shadow of the Camera / Monika Faber -- Looking in the Mirror and in the Museum : Intention and Tradition in German and Austrian Self-Portraiture, 1900-1940 / Stefen Weppelmann -- All Eyes : Self-Portraiture, The Collapse of Truth and the Birth of the New Man / Philipp Blom -- Plates and Catalogue Entries / Rolf H. Johannsen, Guido Messling, Tobias G. Natter, and Olaf Peters -- Checklist -- Index -- Photograph and Copyright Credits.

Hardcover. Black and color-illustrated DJ with white and gilt lettering; red cloth boards with black lettering; 399 pp.; richly illustrated (some color). Between 1871 and 1919, the population of Berlin quadrupled and the city became the political center of Germany, as well as the turbulent crossroads of the modern age. This was reflected in the work of artists, directors, writers and critics of the time. As an imperial capital, Berlin was the site of violent political revolution and radical aesthetic innovation. After the German defeat in World War I, artists employed collage to challenge traditional concepts of art. Berlin Dadaists reflected upon the horrors of war and the terrors of revolution and civil war. Between 1924 and 1929, jazz, posters, magazines, advertisements and cinema played a central role in the development of Berlin's urban experience as the spirit of modernity took hold. The concept of the Neue Frau -the modern, emancipated woman-helped move the city in a new direction. Finally, Berlin became a stage for political confrontation between the left and the right and was deeply affected by the economic crisis and mass unemployment at the end of the 1920s. This book explores in numerous essays and illustrations the artistic, cultural and social upheavals in Berlin between 1918 and 1933 and places them in a broader historical framework. -- WorldCat. Good (Ex-Library from Visual Studies Workshop, with a white sticker on lower DJ spine, front of DJ and on rear pastedown; DJ and boards are lightly edgeworn/scuffed/smudged/bumped; textblock edges have light smudging; interior is clean; binding is solid.).

Hardcover. Blue cloth/boards; gilt lettering. Glossy, black dj with color image and white lettering. 231 pp. with color illustrations throughout; includes a few archival bw photos. Text in English. Catalogue from the exhibition held February to June 2016 at the Neue Galerie, New York. Examining Edvard Munch's influence on his Austrian and German contemporaries, this book offers a fascinating new look at the Norwegian artist, whose painting The Scream has become a symbol of modern angst. Edvard Munch came of age during an artistic period that celebrated beauty and design. But in his own art, Munch explored darker themes alienation, sin, and human vulnerability. His resulting work incorporated the vivid colors of previous styles but intensified their emotional power and paved the way for an entirely new approach to painting. Although much has been written about Munch's life and its influence on his art, there has not been a study of the artist's influence on his German and Austrian peers until now. Featuring contributions by leading scholars in the field, including Patricia Bermann, Alison Chang, Jay Clarke, Reinhold Heller, Jill Lloyd, Nils Ohlsen, and Oystein Uvstedt, this authoritative and beautifully illustrated book explores Munch's impact on Austrian and German artists of the period within an Expressionist context. It also examines work in specific media, such as Munch's seminal contributions to printmaking. The artist's thematic and stylistic leitmotifs are highlighted, including self-portraiture, urban scenes, landscapes, couples, and the artist and his model. Vibrant reproductions of works from throughout Munch's oeuvre, including such icons as The Scream, Madonna, and The Kiss, make this a splendid introduction to the artist as well as an exciting springboard to the study of European Expressionism. VG+/VG (Book is very clean and crips. Dust jacket has light shelfwear.).

"Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) was on of the gaints of twentieth-century art. As the fonder and first president of the Secession in 1897, Klimt was a central figure in the cultural life of Vienna's Golden Age and provided a crucial link between nineteenth-century Symbolism and Modernism. His sensual portrayals of women and richly patterened landscapes anticipated many of the formal advances of his peers. Klimt pushed the boundaries of artistic expression and developed a unique pictorial vocabulary, drawing from sources of the past to create a refined, delicate, highly evacative style. Klimit's work embodies the quintessence of fin de siècle Vienna" -- CONTENTS: Discovering Klimt / Ronald S. Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. Otto Dix, A Terrifying and Beautiful World; Olaf Peters, editor; Prestel Munich, Berlin, London, New York; 2010. Wilhelm Heinrich Otto Dix (1891 1969) was a German painter and printmaker, noted for his ruthless and harshly realistic depictions of German society during the Weimar Republic and the brutality of war. Along with George Grosz, he is widely considered one of the most important artists of the Neue Sachlichkeit. When the First World War erupted, Dix enthusiastically volunteered for the German Army. He was assigned to a field artillery regiment in Dresden. In the autumn of 1915 he was assigned as a non-commissioned officer of a machine-gun unit on the Western front and took part in the Battle of the Somme. In November 1917, his unit was transferred to the Eastern front until the end of hostilities with Russia. When the Nazis came to power in Germany, they regarded Dix as a degenerate artist and had him sacked from his post as an art teacher at the Dresden Academy. This book accompanies the exhibition presented at the Neue Galerie New York and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. This oversized book, 257 pages measuring 285mm X 235mm, is in near fine condition in a near fine dust jacket, now in a protective mylar wrap. This heavy book will require additional postage.
